Book Description

June 8, 1999 7 and up2 and up
Nine-year-old Mandie Shaw knows that cats don't just appear out of nowhere, especially in the woods near her family's log cabin. But when Mandie and her good friend Joe hear a soft meow on their way home from school, they soon discover that's exactly what has happened. Who would leave a cat alone in the woods? And will finding the answer mean Mandie will have to give up the first pet she's ever had?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-The first in a series that crosses historical fiction with mystery, this easy chapter book falls short of the mark. The story is set in North Carolina in 1897. On the way home from school, nine-year-old Mandie thinks she sees something being thrown from a wagon, and when she later investigates, she finds a cat. She takes the animal home with her, where it gives birth to a kitten and vanquishes a rat, thereby getting into the good graces of Mandie's mother. When Mandie discovers that a cat has been stolen from a family that is visiting her friend, she must make a major decision. In the end, she does the right thing, of course, and the owners allow her to keep the kitten. This is typical series fare, with a fairly simple plot and straightforward text. The story is entertaining and the characters are generally likable, but the writing is uninspired, with moments of didacticism and dialogue that does not ring true to the time period. Leppard introduces several elements that are not resolved in the course of the story. Pass on this one and introduce children to Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books (HarperCollins) instead.

More About the Author

Lois began her first Mandie story when she was only eleven years old. But eventually the manuscript was tucked away in a drawer and forgotten. Lois went on to attend Furman University and studied music for several years in New York City where she and her sister sang professionally. Some years ago, Lois was prompted to pull that old manuscript out and began to work on Mandie's story-of her childhood in the South at the turn of the century and her Cherokee heritage. The rest is history and now the MANDIE BOOKS series have sales nearing six million copies! Lois writes from her home in South Carolina. Enthusiastic young fans fill her mailbox with their insightful responses to her stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, but lots of confusing things, October 3, 2008

This review is from: Who's Mandie? (Young Mandie Mystery Series #1) (Paperback)
For one, Mandie's 'mother', who is her stepmother, is viewed as a good-tempered, kind woman who cooks wonderfully, and gets along very well with her husband.

In the first book of the Mandie series (not the Young Mandie series) Etta Shaw (Mandie's stepmother) is a brutal, cold, unfeeling woman whose cooking is acceptable, and who is openly cruel to poor Mandie.

Irene is much different too. She's viewed as a spoiled, but kind girl all the same, and the usual older sister. But in the Mandie series, she is a mean spirited, cruel, stereotype 'evil stepsister'.

PLOT

(Warning, spoilers!)

Mandie and Joe are walking home from school, and Mandie hears something in the wood. Obviously, nosy Mandie simply HAS to investigate, but Joe firmly tells her he will not wait, because he's expected back home. Mandie is so stubborn!

But Mandie is determined to investiagte the sounds, and soon finds a black and white striped cat. It soon gives birth to only one kitten (coughunrealisticcough), with yellow fur.

Mandie wants to keep the kitten, but she hears of a family that lost their cat. Could it be the one she found?

(Spoilers end here)

It was an okay book, but lacked reality and the foundation that Lois Leppard laid out in the original Mandie series.
