4.0 out of 5 stars USEFUL BOOK BUT WITH LIMITATIONS, February 25, 2009
By

I have a 1995 Barnes and Noble reprint copy of this book that was originally published in 1970. The book runs a length of 218 pages including index.

It is a somewhat useful volume, with 'somewhat' being dependent on whom ones wishes to look up. And that brings me to my 4-star rating, and that rating is due to the limited number of entries in the book which are close to 100. All are listed by alphabet and run the course of Abelard through John Wyclif.

Many well known people are listed but when one considers the middle ages ran in various areas from 300 through 1300 A.D., 100 entries will just not suffice for in-depth searching. If the person you are looking for is there he/she is covered in description very well, but all too often the person one seeks just will not be there.

Though it will no doubt call for a little more money, I prefer THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE MIDDLE AGES by Norman F. Cantor, general editor. Whichever volume one chooses, however, will offer help in searching out the numerous people of the Middle Ages.

Semper Fi.

I have used this book both as a Student and as a Teacher for many years now. If one wants a quick reference guide to a long ago age, you could do a whole lot worse with another book.
