Editorial Reviews

After Desperately Seeking Susan, Madonna was proclaimed a promising screen presence, but the one-two punch of Shanghai Surprise and Who's That Girl put a dent in her ascent. Directed by James Foley, who worked with Sean Penn in At Close Range (and shot the video for "Papa Don’t Preach"), it's an aggressively 1980s gloss on the screwball comedies of the 1930s. Jonathan Demme pulled off the gambit in Something Wild, but lightning did not strike twice. As the proceedings begin, platinum blonde bubblehead Nikki Finn (Madonna in Judy Holliday-gone-punk mode) has just been released from prison for a crime she didn't commit. Loudon Trott (Griffin Dunne, After Hours), a fastidious tax attorney, is assigned by future father-in-law Mr. Worthington to make sure she gets on the bus to Philly. (Turns out Worthington was involved with Nikki's bid in the pokey.) Loudon is also charged with delivering a rare cougar to eccentric superior Montgomery Bell (Sir John Mills)--on the day before his nuptials. In short order, the cat escapes and Nikki drags Loudon away from his wedding preparations to clear her name. Along the way, these two diametrically opposed entities fall improbably in love. The movie may have bombed, but the soundtrack, featuring four Madonna tracks, was a hit. Co-written by Ken Finkleman (The Newsroom) and lensed by Jan DeBont (Speed), Who's That Girl is manna for Madonna-philes. All others are advised to proceed with caution--or head straight for Howard Hawks’ timeless Bringing Up Baby instead. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5.0 out of 5 stars Quien es esa nina, January 16, 2006
This review is from: Who's That Girl? (DVD)
This is my favorite Madonna movie and one of my favorite 80's movies because it is so funny and Madonna plays such a unique character.

Madonna plays Nikki Finn, a street-wise ex-con with white hair and a good left hook.

Nikki meets up with Louden Trott (played by Griffin Dunne) who was assigned to pick her up after she was released from prison and take her to the bus station. Mr. Worthington (Bibi Besch) doesn't want Nikki anywhere near his daughter Wendy's (Haviland Morris) wedding to Louden because he was the one who set her up to go to the big house!

Nikki convinces Louden to stop at the mall because after all her mom thinks she's been shopping for the past four years so it wouldn't be very nice to come home empty handed. But Nikki has ulterior motives because she wants to "cleah my name" and prove to everyone that she was set up.

It's now a race to see if Nikki can con Louden into helping her. Along the way they fall in love. But Louden is an uptight boy from Scarsdale who has reservations about a kooky girl from Philly.

But, Nikki gets to Louden's wedding and stops the preacher in mid-sentence so that she can tell everyone that Mr. Worthington set her up. She also informs everyone that Louden is really in love with her, and this time he has the backbone to fight for her. Wendy doesn't mind though, she has her hot UPS driver to keep her company.

Louden and Nikki take their bus trip together back to Philly as Madonna's third '87 hit plays, "Who's That Girl."

Madonna's acting was wonderful, and she sounded so funny and looked very sexy. But the poor thing was crucified for this picture, unrightfully so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lowden Clear!!! Murray!!! Nobody shushed Nikki Fin!!!, January 22, 2003
This review is from: Who's That Girl? (DVD)
I am waiting with baited breath until the DVD version is released. This has been one of my favorite movies for over 10 years. Now I'll admit that this wasn't the "best" movie ever made and lacks just about everything that the movie critics are looking for, BUT - the movie is hilarious, has great comedy writers, great music and makes you feel good! I think that's how people ultimately judge movies, how it makes you feel!

So it may not have been nominated for a Golden Globe or Oscar, but if you LOVE Madonna and enjoy a simple comedy, you can't beat Who's That Girl!

This review is from: Who's That Girl? (DVD)
I have to say that i'm the biggest fan of Madonna besides her music which i love i also like her movies, but this one is my all time favorite from hers!!!!!!! Madonna at her best with this one and its the best Madonna movie from the 80's!!!!! Madonna gets out of prison and has no idea that her attorney which is on his way to go pick her up ends up in total destruction and ends up falling in love with the free spirited Madonna!!!!!! This Madonna movie needs to be in a great collection of movies!!!!!!
