Book Description

September 1997
This work deals with the personalities involved on both sides of the Irish War of Independence and Civil War, listing not only the main activists but many other combatants who played supporting but equally important roles in the conflict. The work draws on both public and private sources, including archives, records and journals of the Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Metropolitan Police, Royal Ulster Constabulary, Irish Defence Forces and the British Army. The book refers to interviews conducted by the author with celebrated people who took prominent parts on the national scene as well as minor participants in long-forgotten incidents. The former include Sean MacBride, Pedar O'Donnell, Todd Andrews, General Michael Brennan, Lt Gen M.J. Costello, Colonel Dan Bryan, Sheila Humphreys, Maire Comerford, Liam O'Flaherty, Sean Dowling and close relatives of Sean MacEoin and Ernie O'Malley, whose biographies the author has also written. Part One of the work is a revision of "Who's Who in the Irish War of Independence 1916-21" (Mercier, 1980). Part Two updates the earlier book by including the Civil War period. For each section there is a chronology of the main events, and appendices give casualties by category, executions, and so on.

This review is from: Who's Who in the Irish War of Independence & Civil (Paperback)
Excellent attempt to categorise the participants of the War of Independence and the Civil War. O'Farrell has a no nonsense approach and his book is invaluable to the Irish Historian. Recommended to those with any interest in the Rising of 1916 or the Civil War.Also usefull as a guide while reading other books from the period.
