From Booklist

The International Astronomical Union has the formidable task of standardizing the naming of features on the moon. Of the 1,993 craters, rims, mountains, and valleys that have been identified, 1,587 are named for people. This work by the Cocks brothers, who are college students, gives brief biographies of these people.

The biographies are in alphabetical order by name of the feature (usually the last name of the person) followed by the complete name of the person, their birth and death dates, type of feature, and its latitude and longitude. The biographies are brief, 50 to 150 words, describing the major contributions of the person to his or her field. Photographs of the moon's surface, both near and far sides and polar views, are in the center of the text. Appendixes include lists of women for whom sites are named, the profession and country of origin of the honorees, location of features by latitude, and sizes of features. The bibliography is divided into atlases, biographical encyclopedias, and historical sources.

The names cover many fields, countries, and historical periods. Many Nobel Prize winners for science have features named for them, as do American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts. Names range from Copernicus and Da Vinci to Armstrong and McAuliffe. This book will be useful in most public and academic libraries where scientific biography is needed.
