Book Description

April 22, 2008
Lila Moreno and her two best friends, Meryl Morgenstern are social mutants. Not because of who they are, but who their guy-repellent daddies are. Lila's dad is the chief of police; Meryl's dad is the football coach, the driver's ed instructor, and the dean of discipline at the high school; and Caressa's dad is a famous musician. Boys are too terrified and intimidated by the girls' dads to come anywhere near them.

So Lila, Meryl, and Caressa decide to take matters into their own hands. On the night of homecoming, instead of going dateless, they hold a Dumb Supper -- a Celtic ritual that shows single young women who their soul mates are. The dinner doesn't go exactly as planned, but never could they guess how much this loser's alternative to homecoming would change their lives.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10 - While attempting to piggyback on the "chick lit" craze, Sandoval offers a more pedantic view of the lives and loves of adolescent girls. Three 16-year-old friends are social outcasts because of their fathers. Lila's dad is the chief of police, Meryl's is the head of discipline at their high school, and Caressa's is a blues musician whose fame intimidates possible beaus. Now how do three girls who are this socially crippled by their fathers' professions survive homecoming? Their answer is a "Dumb Supper," a Celtic ritual that is supposed to help them find their true loves. Unfortunately, the dinner ceremony is interrupted, and so the question is: Are the young men they meet their destiny or just plain luck? The lessons get a bit heavy-handed, especially when two of the girls are involved in a search for a lost child during a snowstorm, but teenagers will respond to the unfairness of parental punishments and the unpredictability of love. Be prepared for a few tries at Dumb Suppers in your area. - Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Addition to the Teen Fiction Genre, September 30, 2004
By
Erika Sorocco (Southern California, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Who's Your Daddy? (Paperback)
Sixteen-year-old Lila Moreno, and her two best friends Caressa Thibodoux and Meryl Morgenstern, are utter mutans in the high school social scene. And it's not because of something any of them have done. No, that's not the case. It's more of who their Fathers are that scares guys away. You see, Lila's Dad is the chief-of-police, Caressa's Dad is this uber-famous musician, and Meryl's Father is not only the driver's ed teacher, and the football coach, but also the dean of discipline at school. Due to their Fathers' chosen careers, all guys are utterly terrified to even step one toe near any of the girls. Hence, they have never had a date, and at this rate, they never will. Until the three friends decide to take matters into their own hands, and hold a Dumb Supper - a Celtic ritual that can show girls who their soulmates are - on the night of the homecoming dance. Now their Dumb Supper has backfired, and is pointing all of them in the wrong directions, and making a complete mockery of their dating lives.

Following in the footsteps of such teen fiction writers as Meg Cabot, and Louise Rennison, Lynda Sandoval has created an enjoyable novel that entwines the crazy lives of three likable characters, into one quick read. Each girl possesses her very own, unique traits that will be enjoyed by female readers young and old; while the crazy situations each girl gets herself into will have readers rolling on the floor laughing. An enjoyable new read for fans of teen fiction, in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER!!!!!!!, February 24, 2005
This review is from: Who's Your Daddy? (Paperback)
I usually have a hard time answering the question, "What Is Your Favorite Book?". But now, this book (along with another book called "Getting Near To Baby" by Audrey Couloumbis) is my answer! I admit, this book was sort of unreal at the end, but you can't help loving it. It's about 3 girls, Lila, Meryl, and Caressa who are social pariahs thanks to their freaky fathers. They do a dumb supper ritual that is supposed to make the first boy you see after the dumb supper date you. The dumb supper does not go as planned, but yet....it does. You will see what I mean if you read this book! It's so good, I can't bear to give away any good parts!

5.0 out of 5 stars BAD REVIEW IS TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR!, February 27, 2005
This review is from: Who's Your Daddy? (Paperback)
I am sorry, but this last review is totally uncalled for. There is absolutely nothing in this story that is insulting.  Considering the fact that Ms. Sandoval is herself a former police officer who left the Force to pursue her writing career, I can assure you that she has nothing but the highest regard for officers of the law.

I found this book absolutely WONDERFUL (I am 43)....My 16 year old Son and my 11 year old daughter both read this book and they loved it.

I did not find it to be in any way trite, boring or offensive. NOT AT ALL. For the life of me I cannot fathom what the heck the last reviewer was so insulted about.  Has this world come to a point where "Political Correctness" has gone too far?  Nobody can say anything any more least they offend someone.

This last reviewer comes across to me as a person with a huge chip on their shoulder.  All I can say is "Lighten Up and Enjoy Life and Good Books."

My family found "Who's Your Daddy?" to be LAUGH OUT LOUD funny and we HIGHLY recommend it to EVERYONE of all ages.
