From Introduction: ... Fulfillment has been the weak spot in e-commerce, particularly for business-to-consumer activities. Many starry-eyed entrepreneurs have suddenly awakened to the real world of physical goods movement and found it a lot less fun than virtual reality.

This Guide is designed to explain the strengths and weaknesses of contract fulfillment providers. The companies covered range from a few employees to thousands. They may have only manual systems or very sophisticated automation. We have included those that we think can do the job for e-commerce start-ups or old-line companies retooling to use the Web.

We have worked extensively in transportation and logistics for 35 years. To our experienced eyes, a sea change is coming in business relationships. This B2B activity will dramatically alter business relationships, especially for purchasing and supply. B2C changes will be strategic supply chain modifications with the continuing impact on small retailers, pharmacies and other Main Street businesses. B2C will change much of the physical landscape of the U.S. and other major countries over the next decade. At the same time, opportunities abound for new virtual companies and entrepreneurs. Their long-term prospects are dependent on getting the backroom aspects of this new business right.
