Holy Land Whose Land?,
By R Streeter (Plano, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Land, Whose Land?: Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots (Hardcover)
Dorothy Drummond has done a great job of presenting four thousand years of history in the Holy Land and demonstrating it's lasting impact on our modern world. But, this work is much more than just a history book: the role of geography, religion, and politics is equally well represented in explaining the past and present in the Holy Land. The author has also included a number of her travel experiences in the Holy Land that add a personal touch to the book. This well-researched book is very educational, but you don't have to be a student or a scholar to get a lot out of it. Numerous maps and a glossary help the reader to connect people, places, and events. The author's completely unbiased treatment of the region's religions and cultures allows the reader to form their own views and perspectives of the region's history and current events. Holy Land Whose Land? is a very interesting book and I highly recommend it.

Whose Land Indeed,
By m weitz (Vienna, Va) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Land, Whose Land?: Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots (Hardcover)
The book is extremely easy to read with excellent "personal"notes by the author interspersed throughout the text. When I started reading, I thought that there was a bias towards one side as the true owners of the land, but as I traversed thoughout the book, it was obvious that each new topic was presented with a new insight for the ownership claim. In the end, I was left with feeling that it is impossible to draw any single conclusion as to which side, if any, has 100% claim. The historical, religious, geographical, & social-economic facts If the author's aim was to present facts for consideration of

Where exactly is the Holy Land, who owns it & why has there been conflict over it since the beginning of time?Dorothy Drummond sets out to enlighten us with a broad overview of this eternal conflict. This is for those who are perplexed about the Middle East, who the people are, & what religions have influenced them. Both the recent history since the birth of Modern Israel & the ancient history have been researched. An accessible, readable, no-frills tour through the land & its history, out of which three monotheistic religions arose.

This review is from: Holy Land, Whose Land?: Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots (Hardcover)
Holy Land Whose Land? Modern Dilemma Ancient Roots is the perfect reference for a study-discussion group wishing to research the background of today's continuing horror headlines coming out of the Middle east. D.Drummond gives a detailed view of the present situation, then takes the reader through the history of this land called home by three monotheistic religions, finally dealing with possible approaches to peace. A detailed glossary, maps, and photographs--as well as firsthand observations are a welcome addition to this very readable, balanced study. With so many folks convinced that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict directly affects the war on terrorism, D.Drummond's book definitely enlightens us.

An issues oriented examination,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Land, Whose Land?: Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots (Hardcover)
Holy Land, Whose Land? Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots by Dorothy Drummond (former president of the National Council for Geographic Education) is a solid, carefully researched, deftly written, issues oriented examination of the lands of Jerusalem and Israel, the bloody strife that rends them today, and the lengthy, tangled, troubled history of their past. Drummond offers both a critical analysis of current tensions as well as introspective study of history since Biblical times that is unusually accessible to the non-specialist general reader. Holy Land, Whose Land? is a "must-read" for anyone who seeks to better understand the tragedy of contemporary international events taking place in the Mideast today.

Excellent Texbook for Current Affairs,
By Mr. Aime Parenteau (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Land, Whose Land?: Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots (Hardcover)
Dorothy Drummond's readable book about the roots of the current Holy Land crisis would be an excellent textbook for high school or college classes concerned with current events. There are three highly interesting elements to this book, written by someone who obviously has been there many times. First, she traces roots of each religion involved in the land and the conflict: Judaism, Islam and Christianity, not just as an overview. She starts at the beginning for each belief system and explains how they interplay with each other. Secondly, she intersperses factual/historical information with descriptions of her visits to each location, spicing it with very human stories involving people she encountered there. Thirdly, she returns to today's problems, reviews them and projects into the future. Having taught for 40 years, I would find the book higly useful in helping teens and young adults get a grasp of the intricate yet sad nature of the concern for who belongs in the Holy Land: Everyone or no one? HOLY LAND WHOSE LAND? By Dorothy Drummond,
By MB (Terre Haute, Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Land, Whose Land?: Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots (Hardcover)
HOLY LAND WHOSE LAND? is a highly readable account of the history and peoples of the Holy Land from pre-history to the present time. Written by Dorothy Drummond, a geographer, scholar and lecturer by profession, the book is made even more interesting by being interspersed with first-hand observations from her own travels. It is generosly supplied with maps, glossaries, photos and a sidebar chronology, particularly helpful to the novices among us as we follow the author through time and places in the Holy Land. Dorothy Drummond's book is surely a must-read, especially as it helps to shed light on the current tragic situation in the Holy Land.

the way to understand the middle-east issues,
By Hyung-Jung Chang (Terre Haute, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Land, Whose Land?: Modern Dilemma, Ancient Roots (Hardcover)
Dorothy Drummond is greatly touched the middle-east issues with many other aspects. Drummond also offers lots of glossary and map in the book, so if the reader gets lost for terms and words, the reader can find the discription and the meaning right away. I guess this book is the way to understand how this region, claimed by three of the world's largest monotheistic religions, struggles with the continual intrusion of the past to the present.
