Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reS-Gr 1-A young mouse tries on the shoes of various members of her family. On the first page she is wearing "great big clompy shoes" that make the sound "glump, glomp, clomp!" Readers lift the flap to find that they are "Daddy's shoes!" Next she wears tippy, red high-heels that make the sound "clop, clip, clap!" These are her mother's shoes. And so it goes. This well-written story features sounds and rhymes that will entertain youngsters and have them chiming right along. The pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations feature bright colors and a cartoon style. The artwork adds comic details to the story. The images of the mouse gleefully dancing, hopping, and prancing her way through the book will also be appreciated. A shoo-in for toddler time.

More About the Author

I have been creating books for children for thirty years, with over sixty published titles. In that time I have seen many changes, from the early limited color and pre-separated art of such books as DADDY MAKES THE BEST SPAGHETTI--which I am very proud to say has been in print for twenty-five years--through full color and now digital art. I still enjoy being challenged and learning and trying new things.

It was working with a traditional art form--quilts--used untraditionally as illustrations for my poetry, that led me to doing more and more designing with the computer, and eventually, to creating completely digital art for some of my books.

I am now exploring the world of picture book apps, along with my husband, three daughters, and two son-in-laws in our newly formed company, appropo. We have a great mix of skills and have lots of fun working together creatively. Even the grandkids are getting involved. Check out the trailer for I AM A TYRANNOSAURUS and watch for our website at

Wherever my personal and professional life takes me, you can be sure it will involve children. I believe that all children are miraculous, and love to share in their fresh open-hearted discovery of the world.

Kids will love the pull-out flaps on this book and the element of mystery (for a very young crowd, obviously). The level of detail in the illustrations is impressive, and the style of them almost seems a bit old-fashioned -- but in a nice, refreshing way. Children will enjoy the word choices that are descriptive and fun to say and repeat.

Overall, a sweet book to read to the toddler/pre-K set.

We found this book at the library, and my two girls (ages 5 and 6) liked it so much I now want to buy it for a Christmas gift. They asked me to read it over and over.
