Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

PW enjoyed the "believable characters, with universal worries and concerns" in this tale of a black sixth-grader who takes matters into her own hands to solve the disappearance of her math tutor and chief rival. Ages 8-12.
Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6 Barbara, a sixth grader, is devastated when she fails math. T. J. Brodie, whom she considers a pest, is assigned to be her peer tutor, and slowly they begin to become friends. When T. J. disappears from school without explanation, Barbara is certain (based solely on circumstantial evidence) that T. J. has been sent to a ``home'' by his grandfather, and she resolves to find him and bring him back. Other strands of the plot add realism and depth to an otherwise farfetched story: the difficulties of friendship, single parent families, and the application of some of the precepts of peaceful demonstration that Barbara learns during her Black History unit. While the main characters are black, the family, school and friendship problems are universal, and all readers will be able to recognize the hurt of failing a subject or of being rejected by best friends as well as the joy of success. Moore's style is pleasant and easy-to-read, which will encourage slow readers. Janet E. Gelfand, Lawrence Junior High School, N.Y.

"Whose Side Are You On?" is about a girl named Barbra. She is 11 years old, and getting pretty bad grades. Her mom hires a math tutor who is coincidentally her worst enemy. But when he disappears, Barbra is the one that sets out to look for him. An interesting read!

A Great Book! I would rate this book a 5 star book *****. A girl named Barbra who is getting a bad grade in math. She was invited to a slumber party but her mother wont let her go in less she gets her math grade up. Her mom hirers a tutor who turns out to be a boy Barbra hates. Later in the story T.J. (the boy) runs away and Barbra tries to find out where he ran off too. She gathers info and finds out T.J.'s grandfather lied about where T.J. was so she starts a boycott. Barbra is the one that sets out to look for him. At the end it all works out. I think this would be an age limit to 11 and up. It is a grate book and I definitely recommend it to others.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Whose Side Are You On? (Paperback)
"Whose Side Are You On?" is a neat book. I didn't get to read the whole book, but part of it was in my reading book at school. It probably interests me because I am 11 just like Barbra. (the main character)I reccomend it to anyone who wants a book about trouble that any normal kid has.
