Can't get enough!,
By Gene Ladner (Houston, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Whose Truth Whose Lies (Audio CD)
I first heard a cut from this cd featuring James Harmon on harmonica ('Splain that to me) on my local Pacifica station in Houston (KPFT) and I called in immediately to find out who this was and where I could find it. I was concerned at first that Harmon might only be featured on a couple of tunes and I was correct. I bought the cd anyway even though it had what I considered to be a hefty price for a cd due to the fact that it is a multi-layered disc (according to the distributor) and my cd player cannot fully realize the potential of the difference in audio quality. After hearing this cd and listening to it on a daily basis for over a month now, it has become possibly my most prized cd and certainly one of my most prized possessions, period! I have been looking (or listening, if you prefer) for slide acoustic guitar of this caliber for years. I have bought MANY a cd for this particular sound, only to be disappointed time after time. I cannot describe the chill bumps I get when I hear such songs as "Black Pony", "Rise Up", "Sweet Ride", "Time For A Change", and the ultimate 'Blues man sold his soul to the Devil tune', "Goin' Down Country". Every time I hear of the Crossroads legend in the future, I will hear the one song that epitomizes that legend for me. "Goin' Down Country" has that element down pat. Doug McLeod's vocal stylings and WICKED slide guitar make me want to own everything he's ever recorded.

I can't think of a single artist currently working in the acoustic folk blues genre who can write songs as penetrating as Doug MAcleod, play guitar with as much groove and style..and sing with such pure emotion and honesty. If you like songs with "meat on their bones"..funky acoustic picking and sexy , greasy slide guitar..this will rock your world!

This album contains exceptional sound quality and is a wonderfully enjoyable listening experience for "blues lovers". The title "Norfolk County Line" is a standout.

How can you not love this guy?,

I've been a fan of Doug's since a friend introduced me to him (literally) in the early 90's, when he was playing in a local bar with his then band. Since I first heard "Grease In My Gravy", his style of blues grabbed me and wouldn't let go. "Whose Truth, Whose Lies?" maintains that grip with lyrics that are simultaneously soulful and fun, music that tugs at you until you move. This is a must-have for any blues lover. There's no way you can beat the purity of one man and his guitar. Keep it comin', Doug! L.A. locals - you can go see Doug live at Cafe Boogaloo in Hermosa Beach every Monday night!!! Bring your friends!

PLAQUERMINE, RISE UP, ST. LOUIS ON MY MIND, WHOSE TRUTH WHOSE LIES......JUST AWESOME!!!! By far the best bluesman out there.Outstanding vocals on EVERY song. Whether it's "happy" blues, sad, crying in your beer blues, acoustic blues, electric blues, country blues, folk blues or any other kind of blues you can think of, MacLeod is THE MAN. As I once read about the late Dave Ray many years ago, "He knows no peer in the blues genre" Hurry and get this one and you'll soon be buying more of Mr. MacLeod

For a Dutchman it's hard to find music that appeals in both music and lyrics. Though my English is getting better through the Internet lyrics are often a problem. Not so with Doug. I just walked into a music in a store, bought is and listened to it, again and again. Not to understand the lyrics but because I liked it so much. Blues, not old fashioned or tradition, but blues nonetheless.
