Book Description

June 5, 2003

"O Christ, whose voice the waters heard and hushed their raging at thy word…" -from "The Navy Hymn"

This second WWII novel from decorated veteran, Robert Vaughan, has the same appeal as Touch the Face of God-painstaking research of military strategy, geography, and equipment-and a new set of intriguing, realistic characters. Patrick and Diane's first meeting is anything but fanciful. In December 1941, Pat and his parents are returning from a holiday in Asia as conditions between Japan and the United States are deteriorating into certain conflict. Diane and her father, a missionary, are fleeing Japan at the heeding of their mission board. Providence has these young people on the same Pan Am Clipper that somehow manages to safely take off when the attacks on Wake Island and Pearl Harbor occur.

Flash forward. Both stationed in Pearl Harbor, Pat-now an officer on the USS ANGELFISH-and Diane-a translator for the Navy-rekindle their relationship and plan to marry. Unfortunate events, including the death of Diane's father and of Pat's ship steward, Choirboy, deepen their relationship, and the two are wed. But upon returning to his ship, Pat faces a crisis as a torpedo mis-launches, and he attempts to dislodge it alone. Sealed in the watertight room, Pat has an encounter with God-and with an old friend-that will save his life and the lives of countless others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jones, Wouk, Griffen, and now Vaughan, June 13, 2003

This review is from: Whose Voice the Waters Heard: A WWII Novel (Paperback)
After I read his book, Touch The Face of God, I knew I would have to get Robert Vaughan's next WWII novel, WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD. I had my name in at the bookstore and when it came out, I got the first one. It was well worth the wait. With these two magnificent novels; WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD, and his earlier,Touch The Face of God, Vaughan has put himself in the same league with James Jones, Herman Wouk, and WEB Griffen. The characters are compelling; Patrick Hannifan who leaves a lucrative musical career to become a submariner, his fiancee, Diane Slayton, and Choirboy, a young black steward who proves his bravery in battle, and his humanity under stress. But one of the most fascinating characters is Commander Yutake Saito, a Japanese officer who gives the readers a unique look at the war from the Japanese perspective.
The only thing wrong with this book is that it did not debut on the best seller list. It is that good, believe me.

This review is from: Whose Voice the Waters Heard: A WWII Novel (Paperback)
WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD is a story of courage of the men who went in harm's way aboard submarines in WW2.
A story of the friendship between an American Diane Slayton and Miko Saito, the daughter of a Japanese officer and the fate that awaits their two fathers as the clouds of war grow ever thicker. The love that developopes between Diane and Patrick Hanifan as the clouds of war grow ever thicker. Most of all, WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD is an inspirational story that will touch the reader. For those with faith, make their faith stronger. For those who may have lost faith, WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD may hopefully help restore their faith. WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD is an OUTSTANDING & EXCELLENT book.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS WRITTEN, January 26, 2004

THE FIRST GOOD WAR STORY I READ WAS "TO HELL AND BACK". I was about 15 yrs. old and very impressed with Mr. Murphy. This book, "Whose Voice the Waters Heard", all though not the same type of war story never the less is very heart felt for those involved in one way or another. If you like some emotion in your reading then find a copy of "Whose Voice the Waters Heard". Do not start reading it until you have time to finish, before going to bed. You might not want to stop reading. You will definitely want more of his books. Normally I read only Westerns, and Mr. Vaughan has some very good ones out there.
