Scarlett sat on the hood of her Mercedes, a plastic wineglass in one hand, cigarette in the other. She wore ice blue denim slacks and matching jacket and underneath a tight low-cut halter-top. Five men stood around her vying for attention. She loved, "holding court" as she sometimes described it to her girlfriends.
"Why I do declare, Bill Chadwick, how you do flirt," she giggled.
"You know you love it," his eyes narrowed as he tried to gauge her reaction to him.
She pursed her lips and blew smoke into the air. Throwing her cigarette to the ground she asked, "Now which one of you would step on this for little old me?" She waved her hand as though she held a coquettish fan.
"Party hardy, you guys," Barry Nesmith moved away from Scarlett's entourage, "I've got to set up my camera tripod and get the binoculars out of the truck. Betcha' we see the UFOs tonight." He had made several moves on Scarlett before, but her phony facade had a tendency to turn him off. He finally decided while she may have been a Venus in the beauty department, she was a Venus fly trap underneath...nothing but an egotistical tramp. He grabbed another beer and the tripod from the back of his pickup.
From the vantagepoint of Dickey Ridge, there was a sparkling panorama of the twinkling lights of Front Royal below. Car headlights seemed as though they were coming from battery operated toys. The illuminated steeple of the Lutheran church pointed a finger at heaven, and the streetlights threaded strings of lighted pearl necklaces through the darkness.
Now, children slept on the backseats of cars, while their parents laughed and partied. A fight broke out between three men, who shouted beligerant insults at each other. The deer moved even deeper into the forest. Normally, the Park police closed the Shenandoah National Park at sundown, but the government had made an exception several months prior for the public to engage in UFO sightings.
As the clock neared midnight, a hush fell over the crowd. Would the date change cause power outage?
At first, it was like watching strings of Christmas tree lights wink out in line--one- by-one. Then, there were gasps of surprise as entire blocks of the town and county rippled into darkness like cascading dominoes falling. From their vantagepoint however, it was possible to see certain patches of light in areas of the county. Front Royal was in pitch darkness.
The sudden silence of the partying crowd spoke of the sobriety of the moment as each individual seemed to be considering the impact this might have on them personally. The darkness and quiet of the night seemed to wrap itself in black velvet.
Suddenly, there was a women's high-pitched scream, and then the words, "Look! Look to the south." Out of the dark void, nine UFOs could be seen, almost as though flying in the tight "V" formation of a migrating flock of geese. They began to bank and roll in unison, perhaps only 7,000 feet in the air. They glowed like a gigantic fireworks display, their blinding light made even brighter by the contrast of the darkness below.
A cheer went up from the crowd. The sounds of champagne corks popping, rebel yells and war whoops split the darkness of the night. Camcorders rolled, Polaroid cameras flashed as the formation flew over Dickey Ridge Overlook, made an abrupt right angle turn, and headed toward Washington, DC.

Interesting Y2K scenario with a wild UFO twist!,
By Musketeer Dad (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Why 2K? (Paperback)
Take three different issues and mix them altogether and see what comes out. In the case of this book, the issues are 1) the uncertainties of Y2K, 2) the Christian faith perspective on life, and 3) UFO's. What a interesting mix of elements! What great possibilities exist! I was pleased with the author's writing style. It was well paced and demonstrated her knowledge of the region that the story takes place in, as well as an understanding of the technology involved in the Y2K related issues. The characterizations were fairly well developed and gave some dimension and texture to the story. As a Christian, I appreciated the biblical perspective that the author used to demonstrate how people of faith may respond to the uncertainties of Y2K. The aspect of a family divided along faith viewpoints added an element of tension to the novel. It was interesting to see how the people in this family grappled with the very real issue of differing worldviews that threatened to split their relationships apart. Is blood thicker than water? You'll have to read this book to find out! Finally, the UFO spin was a real mind-bender. Without giving away the twist, I have to say that I'd never given any thought to the perspective painted by the author regarding this issue. It has given me much to think about and to discuss with my friends. I would recommend this book as a good summer novel to read and ponder what is to come in the months that lie just ahead of us.
