5.0 out of 5 stars Superb
As a physician working with hundreds of "tired" women, I found this book intriguing to say the least so I put Gittleman's theory to the test. Out of the 50 women I have tested for serum copper and zinc levels nearly 75% of them have demonstrated a zinc defienciency and copper dominance. I am treating these women with Gittleman's protocol and diet plan...

2.0 out of 5 stars This book could have been a pamplet
This is an interesting book, but does not really contain that much new information outside of the suggestion that you should be checked for high copper if you are a woman. Could easily be one of those pamplets in a health food store--distressing that the author spread it out so thin into a book.

As a physician working with hundreds of "tired" women, I found this book intriguing to say the least so I put Gittleman's theory to the test. Out of the 50 women I have tested for serum copper and zinc levels nearly 75% of them have demonstrated a zinc defienciency and copper dominance. I am treating these women with Gittleman's protocol and diet plan. Nearly 50% have already noticed a more even energy level - it has been 6 weeks since they have been on the plan - and all say they feel better overall. Ann Louise Gittleman has always been a pioneer and ahead of the crowd by at least five years. I am glad that my patients can take advantage of her insights now. A brave book and I feel so sad that so many readers have truly missed the boat on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, an answer to my problems!!!, March 30, 2003
By A Customer

After suffering for many years from acne, dry skin, hair falling out, anxiety disorders, occasional insomnia and hormonal problems like bad pms, I have finally found what the causes of all these problems were; Copper toxicity! After reading Gittleman's book, I had a hair mineral analysis done and my copper levels were 5 times the normal limit! I have been following the advice in this book for 3 months and I feel like a totally new person. A very overlooked problem that could be the cause of many health problems especially for women. Go buy the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth spending a few coppers on... (sorry, couldn't resist), November 15, 2000
By A Customer
In this book, Ms. Gittleman suggests that excess copper is a common cause of fatigue and other chronic health problems, especially among women. Many popular foods, such as tea, nuts, beans, avocados and whole wheat, are high in copper. Even if we don't consume excess amounts, other factors (including stress and the Pill) can cause it to build up in our tissues instead of being excreted.

It's true that the author doesn't have a lot of evidence from peer-reviewed medical journals. Still, the idea makes sense, and her profile of the typical person with excess copper, especially the "physically tired/mentally overactive" part, describes me quite well. It also describes a good friend of mine to a 'T'. (She even has the characteristic orangish hair color.) I can't say I'm a true believer, but I figure it can't hurt, so I might as well try it. The suggested eating plan seems healthy and simple enough, and the optional supplements - B6, C, zinc, manganese - aren't expensive or dangerous.

I agree with some other reviewers that this book is a bit light on content: it's less than 150 pages, with a fair number of anecdotes and some repetition. Also, the useful material is scattered all over the book; an index would be greatly appreciated. But if it works, it will be well worth the price.

I could not put this book down! It was easy to read and informative. I had an analysis done and sure enough, I have a copper overload. Finally I know why I am tired all the time. This book is a must read! I plan to give a couple of these books as gifts. This seems to be a major problem and people don't even know it. Doctor's should read this book, it may help their patients. Being tired all the time is not all in our heads.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Combat CFS & Fibromyalgia--Read this book..., September 15, 2002

To Melissa Diane Smith and Others....

This was an exceptional book! What you have written makes so much sense that anyone complaining of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia would be wise to buy this book and read it. I am a certified physician assistant and a candidate for the doctor of naturopathy degree for healthcare professionals and I have referred several people to this book, Syndrome X and Going Against the Grain.

I think that all three of these books feed on each other and would be quite helpful to anyone, not only people suffering from chronic diseases.

These books give options for self-improvement without the use of multiple medications. The American people of today need to take a closer look at their treatment plans and get back to basics and fundamentals of natural health.

The medications and foods we eat are our biggest problems and these three books address those problems and methods of correcting them that are essentially easy, but will take determinated and an adjustment of will power....

Thank you to the writers for giving us such eye-opening books in an easy-to-read format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, July 21, 2002

Love her! Copper overload will not be everyone's reason for fatigue, of course, but it's possibly true for many people. She explains why the copper/zinc becomes imbalanced and what to do about it. My hair analysis of 8 years ago showed this syndrome, but no one knew what it meant. In fact, it was not considered "abnormal" nor did it merit any red flag whatsoever. I'm feeling better since implementing Gittleman's advice. Easy to do on your own. Copper can be like a toxic heavy metal for some of us. I'm less anxious, noticeably more relaxed. This was great just in itself, even if the fatigue does not improve (but it has, slightly, too). If you think this could be you--Try it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Critics: take a second look; the data is out there!, April 9, 2000

This review is from: Why Am I Always So Tired: Discover How Correcting Your Body's Copper Imbalance Can: Keep Your Body from Giving Out Before Your Mind Does, Free You from Those Mid-Day Slumps, gi (Hardcover)
About a year ago, I noticed this book in a bookstore; being a fan of Ann Louise Gittleman, I glanced through it. Unfortunately I dismissed it as too speculative without buying it and reading it thoroughly. I have battled fatigue for many years. I take what I think is very good care of myself and am actually working toward a master's degree in nutrition. Yet, I still battle fatigue. Now, finally, after years of tired frustration, I am ready to try this approach.

This really isn't a new theory; she's simply putting the pieces of the puzzle together, producing a practical approach. The very well respected, late Carl Pfeiffer and others in his field have produced the evidence that copper overload in moderate and extreme amounts can be very detrimental to us both physically and emotionally.

I think think this book is worth at least picking up; it certainly provides food for thought. The bibliography also provides excellent resources for further analysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars INTRIGUED BY REVIEWS, June 22, 1999

I have been a fan of Ann Louise's for many years. When I heard about her new book and then read all the glowing and then not so glowing reviews, I had to read it myself. Let me say, that What Ever this author has written about..from the problems of going fat free to parasites to women's health concerns...usually hits main stream five years later. This book is prophetic and revolutionary. Give this brave author a break - she is Always Right On.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Am A Copper Convert, May 23, 1999

This review is from: Why Am I Always So Tired: Discover How Correcting Your Body's Copper Imbalance Can: Keep Your Body from Giving Out Before Your Mind Does, Free You from Those Mid-Day Slumps, gi (Hardcover)
I started on the Copper Overload Diet immediately after finishing the book in a couple of hours. I really think I am not so nervous, anxious, or tired during the mid -afternoon. I used to be in mining in Arizona and had to stop my job because of migraines. After three months, the migrains subsided. Gittleman says migraines are symptom of copper overload and I was mining copper!

5.0 out of 5 stars thorough job of explaining cause, symptoms, and treatment, April 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Why Am I Always So Tired: Discover How Correcting Your Body's Copper Imbalance Can: Keep Your Body from Giving Out Before Your Mind Does, Free You from Those Mid-Day Slumps, gi (Hardcover)
Thank you Amazon Books for recommending this book in your recent e-mail. Three weeks earlier, my doctor gave me the news that my hair analysis showed a copper level so high that it was off the chart. Ms. Gittleman does a thorough job of explaining the cause, symptoms, and treatment of this condition. Her facts and advice are right in line with my doctor's explanation and treatment plan. I highly recommend this book to women who have received a medical diagnosis of CFS, yeast infection, SAD, PMS, and similar illnesses. Read the book and have the hair analysis done. You just might discover, as I did, that your illness is caused or aggravated by a copper overload.
