Why am I Here? A story about becoming the-best-version-of-yourself! answers this age old question from a child's point of view. It is a loving story of a little boy named Max that infuses humor with adorable illustrations to convey this life-affirming story. The book starts with Max asking his grandpa, "Why am I here...in this world?" The grandpa replies with a question for Max, "What are Birds good at being?" Through some cute discussion and illustration, the answer is revealed to be - a bird "just enjoys being the best bird it can be."
From that answer, Mr. Kelly uses the relationship between Max and his grandfather to lay out many easy to understand examples of how Max can choose to be the best version of himself. Max shares his new knowledge with his other family members, teacher and friends. The journey of Max and friends becoming the- best -version- of- themselves attempts to awaken self-awareness in the reader of our own choices and decisions.
This is a beautiful story that speaks with innocence able to reach both young and old where they are in life. The natural flow found in Kelly's book is entertaining and understandable for most children, even my three-year old. Help someone you love become the best-version-of-themselves by answering the age-old question, "Why Am I Here?"Why Am I Here?
The story proceeds to show Max pondering these choices, typical choices that a boy or girl will face such as healthy eating, obeying his mum and getting on with his sister. Sometimes he makes good choices and sometimes, the wrong choice.
The important take-away from this story is that Max thinks about how he feels when making these choices. He realizes that good choices makes him feel good, and so these must be the right choices to make. In the grown-up world, we call this discernment! And the funny thing is, when we start to openly help our child discern the small stuff in his/her life, parents and teachers find themselves better at discerning too :>) See our ideas for uses of this book at Litland's site. Highly recommended!
"1000 Friends" at The Matthew Kelly Foundatiion! The book now has been developed into a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade Program for children in schools across the country. I am very certain this program will be something very positive and wonderful influence on our young children - who, of course - ARE OUR VERY FUTURE!
Thank you, Matthew Kelly! You are indeed a "GODSENT" to our very needy and very "confused", but still.....wonderful WORLD.
