As a third grade public school teacher who has incorporated many of Matthew Kelly's ideas and spiritual regimen into my own life, I have been eagerly anticipating this book! After I read it aloud to my class (who is very familiar with the phrase, "Is that helping you become the-the-best-version-of-yourself?"), they applauded! Our discussion about the book unveiled the truth that children relate to a story about someone like themselves, someone who makes what adults might call "little decisions" throughout the day, and every decision made directly affects one's character. I have purchased several more copies of the book to include in my classroom library, and I have also included it among my Book List for Parents.

This is an excellent book, a great way to introduce Matthew Kelly's "becoming the best version of yourself" to young children. We have read it to our 5 and 3 year old, then later when they are misbehaving or asking to eat candy for supper we simply ask them, is/will that choice making you the best version of yourself? They pause, think and always make a better decision. It is fantastic that Matthew has found a catch phrase that both children and adults alike can relate to.

World-renowned author Matthew Kelly has been showing adults for years how to become the Best Version of Yourself in his more than a dozen books. Now he spreads his passionate message to children in his first ever Children's book.

Why am I Here? A story about becoming the-best-version-of-yourself! answers this age old question from a child's point of view. It is a loving story of a little boy named Max that infuses humor with adorable illustrations to convey this life-affirming story. The book starts with Max asking his grandpa, "Why am I here...in this world?" The grandpa replies with a question for Max, "What are Birds good at being?" Through some cute discussion and illustration, the answer is revealed to be - a bird "just enjoys being the best bird it can be."

From that answer, Mr. Kelly uses the relationship between Max and his grandfather to lay out many easy to understand examples of how Max can choose to be the best version of himself. Max shares his new knowledge with his other family members, teacher and friends. The journey of Max and friends becoming the- best -version- of- themselves attempts to awaken self-awareness in the reader of our own choices and decisions.

This is a beautiful story that speaks with innocence able to reach both young and old where they are in life. The natural flow found in Kelly's book is entertaining and understandable for most children, even my three-year old. Help someone you love become the best-version-of-themselves by answering the age-old question, "Why Am I Here?"Why Am I Here?

Why am I here? is a project supported in part by the Marge and Charles J. Schott Foundation. It's main character, Max, is just old enough to begin wondering about his role in the world around him. And his grandfather gives him sage advice: to think about his choices every day, and try to choose in ways that will help him be the best Max he can be.

The story proceeds to show Max pondering these choices, typical choices that a boy or girl will face such as healthy eating, obeying his mum and getting on with his sister. Sometimes he makes good choices and sometimes, the wrong choice.

The important take-away from this story is that Max thinks about how he feels when making these choices. He realizes that good choices makes him feel good, and so these must be the right choices to make. In the grown-up world, we call this discernment! And the funny thing is, when we start to openly help our child discern the small stuff in his/her life, parents and teachers find themselves better at discerning too :>) See our ideas for uses of this book at Litland's site. Highly recommended!

I got my very first copy of this PRICELESS little/BIG book for young children for FREE! Since I am a member of the
"1000 Friends" at The Matthew Kelly Foundatiion! The book now has been developed into a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade Program for children in schools across the country. I am very certain this program will be something very positive and wonderful influence on our young children - who, of course - ARE OUR VERY FUTURE!

Thank you, Matthew Kelly! You are indeed a "GODSENT" to our very needy and very "confused", but still.....wonderful WORLD.

My family is big fans of Matthew Kelly and we really liked this book. It may have been a bit advanced for my youngest to pay attention to, but since he likes to be read the same books over and over, he will eventually get the meaning of the book.

This is a well written book and very to the point for most adults and children. Was well received by both of our young grandsons. I would recommend this book to parents but feel it is better to read the book to the child the first time so some explaination and talk about "Why I am Here" can follow. You may be surprised at what you here.
