Pleasant Relief,

This review is from: Why Babies Do That: Baffling Baby Behavior Explained (Hardcover)
Full disclosure: I am a new parent. And, despite the volumes of information from books and advice from other parents, I have found the experience to be often baffling. (And I consider myself to be educated and reasonably intelligent.)
Perhaps it is the avalanche of information and advice under which I've been suffocating that makes this book so pleasant. The pictures are appropriate and cute (though none of these babies are as cute as my daughter) and the brief answers to questions like "why do some newborns open only one eye at a time, cross their eyes, or roll their eyes back" (all of which my daughter does) offer jolts of relief when needed. OK, this book is no Dr. Spock or What to Expect in the First Year; still, it's a fun little book that I've found offers relief when your child really does seem a cipher.

A lovely gift book for the baby lover in your life,
By Ann Douglas "pregnancy/parenting author" (Peterborough, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)

Jennifer Margulis has written a gorgeous gift book about babies. Each section of the book focuses on a particular aspect of infant behavior that may be puzzling to new parents -- e.g. why babies have such erratic sleep patterns, why they have to eat so often, why they say "dada" before "mama," and so on. The book would make a great gift for new parents, a school-aged older sibling of a new baby, or a doting grandparent. Highly recommended.

The perfect baby shower gift!,
By Tertia Albertyn (Durbanville, W Cape South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Why Babies Do That: Baffling Baby Behavior Explained (Hardcover)
This is the perfect baby shower gift idea. An absolutely divine book; each page is dedicated to explaining a baffling baby behavior, beautifully illustrated with stunning photos.
The book is written in a humorous way, but it is still informative. Besides having a good giggle at the odd things babies do, you actually learn. It is such a nice baby shower gift, unusual and also so useful. But the best bit....Once you've finished reading and you've learnt what you need to know, it makes a perfect book to `read' to your baby, because as you know, babies LOVE looking at pictures of other babies. I loved this book. Such a lovely, sunny, funny, cute book.

Here's Why!,
This review is from: Why Babies Do That: Baffling Baby Behavior Explained (Hardcover)
I always lamented the fact that babies don't come with operating instructions. I knew What to Expect When I was Expecting, but not after. With little baby experience, and even less baby BOY experience, when my babies were born I was forced to trust my instincts and absorbed advice from friends, hoping that I was somewhere in the ballpark of "doing it right". And now, here's exactly the book that would have helped.
The book is beautifully done and answers mysterious questions like WHY baby sucks her thumb, or bangs her head or plays with her poop. Each page of text is balanced by a photograph of a beautiful baby - some featuring acne, even, when we're wondering Why Babies Have Acne. This is a great book for parents of young babies - I've already given it as a baby shower gift to great reviews.

I got this after reading about it on a blog. The pictures are great and I love reading about why babies do that. I think this would be a great shower gift. I got this when my baby was almost one...probably because I didn't have time to read it before then!

Mysteries...solved,
By
This review is from: Why Babies Do That: Baffling Baby Behavior Explained (Hardcover)
Baby behavior is definitely baffling. When I was a first time parent I often looked at the mysterious little person sharing my life and wondered...why? Why is peek-a-boo so endlessly fascinating? Why does she fall apart if I leave the room even for a moment. I wish I had had this book then, because a lot of my questions are answered in it. Jennifer Margulis's voice is warm, knowledgeable, and personal. New parents will be reassured that the strange things that their babies do are not only normal, but important and meaningful. The photographs are both sweet and honest.

This review is from: Why Babies Do That: Baffling Baby Behavior Explained (Hardcover)
We are used to seeing babies do the quirkiest things; like drool and go bald and smile for no apparent reason. But, WHY? Funny and factual, "Why Do Babies Do That" addresses these rarely questioned, widely accepted strange little behaviors with scientifically fascinating answers and comforting quips each with an awwww-striking photograph of the precious little creatures we love (and once were) - BABIES. Delightful, great stocking stuffer.

Ever wonder why babies drool? Or why they just won't go to sleep? Or why they grab onto your finger with a grip of iron? Or why they're so dang cute? Jennifer Margulis has the answers for you in this little coffee table book filled with solid answers and the cutest dang babies. A great shower gift, or a birth gift for an older sibling.

This book will not replace your baby care books but it is a fun little book full of interesting tidbits about babies. I have a 9 mos old but found myself reading parts aloud to my husband that explained why our son did what he did. It's not a scientific book by any means (one page is generally devoted to an explanation) but I do find it refreshing that what the author says does not lean toward one viewpoint or another. It seems to easily discuss a variety of theories when necessary all in plain english (refreshing when so many books are adamant about their viewpoints on baby care). The best part about this book is that my son LOVES it! The baby photos on each page keep him occupied for awhile. He goes for this book on the shelf nearly everytime he plays. If the authors would print this on chunky pages or laminate the pages that would be excellent! I might laminate the book for my son.
