Book Description

September 28, 1988
Here are the answers to questions that have been keeping you and your loved ones up nights, questions that have driven families to feuds, questions that nag and nag just won't let go. Have you ever wondered juts what purpose those warning labels on mattresses are supposed to serve? Or what happens to the trend that wears off tires? And how many meals have you spent pondering the perennially baffling question of why hot dogs come ten to a package while hot dog buns come in eight?

Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise? has the solutions to these and scores of other Imponderables. David Feldman's witty and irresistible compendium of knowledge goes where other reference books fear to trend, uncovering closely guarded secrets, revealing long-hidden facts, and, like all other invaluable works of detection, never letting well enough alone. Whether you want to settle those arguments about the difference between a kit and a caboodle, or just curious about dry cleaning, Teflon, Wayne Gretzky, or chocolate bunnies, Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise? is indispensable.

About the Author

David Feldman is the author of Imponderables and How to Win at Just About Everything. He has a masters degree in popular culture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Formerly in the programming department of NBC-TV, he consults and lectures on the media and writes about a wide range of popular culture.

From AudioFile

From his book of "imponderables"--explanations of everyday phenomena--author David Feldman has selected two dozen questions that he adapts into an interactive multiple-choice quiz game. The format is ingenious, taking all passivity out of the listening experience. Feldman serves as host and moderator, with three actors playing the panelists, named "A" "B" and "C," who provide three possible answers to each imponderable. After a ten-second musical interlude, the listener must choose between the answers, testing wits with the panelists, after which Feldman provides the correct explanation. Even for those who have never thought about why some eggs are brown, why aluminum foil is shiny on only one side, or what makes whips crack, listeners young and old will enjoy this truly interactive audio game show. 5.0 out of 5 stars fun facts for curious adults and children alike!, April 7, 2000
This review is from: Why do Clocks Run Clockwise? And Other Imponderables (Paperback)
The Imponderables series by David Feldman is a fun series of books filled with the answers to the questions that both adults and children often wonder about. This particular book is, I believe, the second in the series. It provides the answer to the proposed question in the title including such strange questions as: "If nothing sticks to Teflon, how do they get Teflon to stick to the pan?" I believe you get the idea. This book is one of those books which you will inhale like a bag of peanuts and will return to time and time again when the question comes up again and you have forgotten the answer. It is particularly handy if you have an inquisitive child in your house too!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great fun for a group of intelligent people, August 10, 1999
By A Customer
The quiz format was a blast as my enitre family of brilliant minds listened and answered. We enjoyed the questions, the challenge and the game! Much more interesting than the book version simply because it could be shared. For those of us who love trivial information and think there is little as fun as learning new things (and laughing at what we thought we knew but didn't), it is a blast. It wasn't meant for non-thinkers or impatient people (or the kind that look at the answers to their crossword puzzel!).

This book was pure pleasure reading. I finished the whole thing in a few hours. Great questions, with clear, easy-to-udnerstand answers. I'd love to read other books by the same author.
