Editorial Reviews

Review

"Perhaps the best available introduction for students to the aims and purposes of a Christian college education . . . I see this book as a potential replacement for Arthur F. Holmes's venerable The Idea of a Christian College, which was popular for a long time in two editions (1975 and 1987). The Creation-Fall-Redemption core gives Why College Matters an excellent conceptual anchor that is likely to make the book's ideas memorable to students." ---- Michael Hamilton, Chair, Department of History, Seattle Pacific University

For a number of years I had taught Arthur Holmes in an introductory course for the transition of students from high school to a Christian liberal arts college. While I value Holmes's content, the presentation assumed more of my freshmen than they were actually bringing to the course. Few even knew what a liberal arts college is. Ostrander's text fills the gap perfectly. Grounded in a robust sense of thinking Christianly about the world, the text makes a strong argument for why and how Christian colleges should approach the integration of faith and learning.

Great book for anyone who wants to try to understand the relationship between religion and education within and among the Christian universities of our so very secular nation(thank God!). There is a point in the book where the author is trying to explain to devoted evangelicals that a secular approach to the study of everything is necessary to truly coming to terms with your faith. The only concern I had was the credentials of the author. But that should not distract from what he is trying to say to all of us, the evangelical and atheist alike.

This definitely solidified our resolve to guide our son in his upcoming college search. The premis is that where a student goes to college shapes his worldview and therefore is important to God.

I'm not for sure about this book. I got it for my daughter for her college classes She got wonderful grades in all of her classes and hasn't said anything to me about any problems with the book.
