Discharge's "Why?" was the album that launched a thousand "dis" clone bands, drawn to the stark black and white graphics, the gory anti-war haiku lyrics and the brutally metallic (yet somehow still very punk) music. This is Motorhead not being able to play instruments. This is madmen drunk on cider, ready to smash a few windows on their way to smashing the state. Out of control, distorted mess... amazing. Everyone from Napalm Death to Metallica to Rancid was influenced by Discharge, yet somehow when people talk about the early 80s UK punk explosion, Discharge gets lost to bands with a more marketable image and more accessable music, like Exploited [...]. Discharge isn't for everyone (there isn't much in the way of "tunes" here... just one bulldozer two chord guitar riff after another and Cal yelling over it all), but "Why" is still something everyone who wants to call him or herself punk should check out at least once.

If you are ever listening to some guy shmooze about how much he knows hardcore punk and you find out he is unfamiliar with this record please disregard anything he has to say. When I was a kid I went to see Discharge. They had just released a US relese which was an awful heavy metal record. One song and a half into the set, the crowd jumped the stage and demolished everything out of disgust. That's how much of a big deal these guys are.

Ok, I admit it, I don't have this exact CD. And I'm too lazy to go thru my records and pull out the 12" and the 7"s and see which songs are on what so I can say what's on this CD. It's pretty clear that it's, definitely the unbelievable Why 12" which, by itself, I'd call, quite possibly, the finest hardcore punk rock 12" record of all time. It looks like, from the songs that they added 1 or 2 7"s, which were pre this Why 12". All those (5?) 7" records were great, classic Discharge.

The Society's Victims box set, which I did get only has like 90% of each record. So, if this has 'em all from the 3 or so records on this, well, that's a good thing eh?

You can see why so many (mainly Swedish) punk bands did a 'dis' cover sound. Eminently listenable and honored by 'dis' bands (DISGUST, etc). There's no metal on this CD. That's, of course, a good thing. This is the finest UK hardcore punk rock. chrisbct@hotmail.com

A true anti-establishment social protest! Play it often and play it loud!
