Note: It had been a while since I looked at the "Mommy" book, and I made the mistake of saying that there was an elephant in the background on most pages "commiting some atrocity". That was wrong. There is a two page sequence where an elephant destroys what little a homeless man has left in his life, which is very cruel (if he had actually meant to do that) and certainly atrocious behavior, but what is in the background of almost every page is the homeless man, not the elephant. So, I edited that sentence out of my review.
The drawings in this book are more colorful (or at least they seem bigger and brighter in some way), and I must give credit where credit is due to the illustrator. Regardless of political viewpoints, the book is well illustrated.
I like the father bear character better than the mommy squirrel, who tended to creep me out with that vacant, detached, expressionless face.
The one irony is that the first reason why Daddy is a Democrat is that "Democrats make sure no one is left behind" (or something like that) and the first thing I thought of was the No Child Left Behind Act, which we know was not a product of Democrats. I got a good laugh from that.
Anyway, if you want your little progressives to learn at an early age that Democrats are the solution to all the problems of mankind, this is the book to buy.
This a great book for children to instill the moral value in them that we must help others, especially those less fortunate. I did like the author's first book a bit better as it has more profuse illustrations. The hidden messages in the artwork, while not evident to the youngest children, certainly make the point to adults (and older children) with the destructive elephant in the background. It's a shame republicans use the elephant as elephants are really kind, social animals.
This is a beautifully illustrated book that teaches children at an early age what Democrats believe--that no one should get left behind, that people who need help ought to get it, that our first responders get the tools they need to do the job, that there are fair labor standards, and quality schools. Democrats also believe in medical research to find cures, keeping our environment clean, equality and justice for all, that every vote should count, and that we live in a safer world when we have dialogue with our enemies.
