5.0 out of 5 stars A Girl's Story of Diabetes, October 17, 2004
By
Rebecca Brown "rebeccasreads" (Clallam Bay, WA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Why Me? Why Did I Have to Get Diabetes? (Hardcover)
Rebeccasreads highly recommends WHY ME? for any youngster & their family who is living with diabetes. It is as bright & breezy as a Third Grader who is thrilled with being alive.

It is also a sincere story of the dramas that rock their world: missed parties, misunderstandings with parents, teasing at school, talking things out about the emotions: fear, worry, frustration, anger & loss of self-esteem.

WHY ME? is wonderfully illustrated & written, as well as an exciting story with something to say. A true collaboration between family members. It also gives some information about this chronic condition & what living with it is like.

WHY ME? needs to be in every school, house of worship, summer camp, Boys & Girls club, library, clinic & hospital.

5.0 out of 5 stars A storybook intended for young people age 3-11, January 3, 2005
This review is from: Why Me? Why Did I Have to Get Diabetes? (Hardcover)
Why Me? Why Did I Have To Get Diabetes? is a storybook intended for young people age 3-11, about a nine-year-old girl diagnosed with diabetes. She must learn to restrict her diet, prick her finger daily, and get insulin shots. Though she holds to the regimen like a trooper, she sometimes asks herself "Why Me?" The narrative deals with guilt and conflicting emotions concerning the all too common condition of childhood diabetes; gentle, somewhat blurry color illustrations add a visual touch to the girl's personal journey. The importance of taking joy in one's life, and being as happy and productive as one can be, is stressed in this highly recommended story ideal for reading aloud.

2.0 out of 5 stars Creates bad attitude, November 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Why Me? Why Did I Have to Get Diabetes? (Hardcover)
My 9 yrs. old daughter has Type I Diabetes for one year now. Over all, she had a good attitude about her Diabetes. We explained to her that, we, as a family, will do our best to support her and help her. I (her mother) told her that I am in it too. I am tying to cook good food for her, watch her blood sugar level all the time... I homeschool her, and it is a big help in monitoring her health and diet... Her friends know that she has it, they like to watch her doing her test...
Sometimes she would get sad, and tell me how tired she is of those tests and shots... I comfort her and she continues on...
In this book girl with diabetes uses phrase "I hate to have Diabetes" a lot. After reading this book my daughter started to use this phrase with anger.
I regret that I bought this book for her... Or, at least I should have substituted this phrase with something more gentle when I was reading to her.
