Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Hefty doses of reassurance and gentle humor fill MacGregor's read-aloud, which is aimed at children of pregnant mothers. Paring down facts for a preschool audience, the author skips over the issue of conception, explaining that a baby grows in a womb, "a snug, cozy, comfy little place inside a woman's tummy." As she emphasizes that a newborn's arrival won't mean that the parents will love the older sibling any less, she strengthens her discussion with kid-appropriate analogies. For example, she likens parents' capacity to love more than one child with a youngster's yearning to have more than one pet ("You won't love your first dog any less if you get a new dog"). Adding a realistic twist, the author observes that children will have to share parents' time with a baby. Yet even here there is a comforting note: it's not just Mommy and Daddy's new baby, "It's your baby, too"--parents will have to share the infant. Cartoon illustrations are cheerful but not always geared to the audience (e.g., a picture captioned "I'd like to have a baby brother, please," shows a jaded-looking child at a table, consulting a menu labeled "Genre du Jour"). The book design, too, is unfortunate, with large blocks of text set in enormous type overwhelming most spreads. Ages 4-7.

More About the Author

Born in the suburbs of New York, I moved to the city itself as soon as I was old enough to go out on my own, eventually transplanting myself to South Florida. A part of me had always felt I belonged where the warm tropical breezes shake the palm fronds into beckoning motions. They beckoned, and in 1984 I answered, leaving my beloved NY behind. I've since put down roots a mile long.

I have been writing for as long as I can remember - from back when I first learned to spell t-h-e c-a-t. By age 9, I had written a play (admittedly short and childish, but a play nonetheless), which was put on at summer camp, and there were stories and poems too, some of which were printed in such places as the newsletter of the arts program I took part in, and the local weekly paper in the community where I grew up.

My earliest serious aspiration was to be an actress, and I'm still a ham who loves the limelight, but I traded in my theatrical dreams for the writing life decades ago and have no regrets whatsoever.

I am definitely a glass-half-full person, and there is no one in the world I'd want to trade lives with. My life hasn't always been easy - I'm a cancer survivor and have had additional health issues too, as well as other adversities - but it's been a marvelous ride so far, and I hope it just keeps going and going and going. I jump out of bed each morning (normally at 5 AM), eager to start a new day.

My past includes stints as a theatre reviewer and specialty-newspaper publisher, a lot of freelance editing, and a bit of agenting. My first book wasn't published till 1993, but I've made up for the late start and have had over 50 conventional books and another over-50 ebooks published in the time since then, and I'm still going strong. I have NO plan to EVER retire. I absolutely LOVE what I do. Why would I ever want to stop?

My wish for each of you who reads this is that you find your life as fun and as fulfilling as I do.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book but..., May 25, 2000

I ordered this book for my 5-year-old. He liked the pictures and most of the book although I had to re-phrase a lot of it. They talk about 'the womb' and such and he isn't at that level. I think maybe for older kids it would be ok. There were also one or two mispelled words and also words in the wrong form (their/there/they're). We've loaned it to two other people who liked it, too, and felt it helped to explain things.

My 6 yr old was excited about the new baby but wanted to know why we wanted another baby. This book gave her some ideas as to why as well as quell her fears that her Daddy and I wouldn't love her as much. We also enjoyed the humorous pictures throughout the book.

A great find for those second, third or more time parents!
