5.0 out of 5 stars "...I lied when I said that honesty was dead", May 19, 2000

This review is from: Why Do They Call Me Mr Happy? (Audio CD)
This album was my introduction to NoMeansNo and my record collection hasn't been the same since.

Having never heard a full album by them, and completely blown away by their live show, I borrowed this CD from a friend. I was not disappointed. With energy that belies the age of the players, "Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy?" features some of the heaviest, smartest punk available.

The brothers Wright are among punk rock's best (and most prolific) storytellers and lyricists, as evidenced in tracks such as "The River" and "Cats, Sex and Nazis." They are also masters of their respective instuments, expressing their ideas in perfect tandem with the vocal "melodies."

Also contained on this album is the hilarious tongue-in-cheek humor typical of NoMeansNo: "Chairman Mao was a great cook...he fed all of China" from "Kill Everyone Now."

Get in on the joke, get this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Because I'm so damn smart, May 5, 2000
This review is from: Why Do They Call Me Mr Happy? (Audio CD)
This is the classic example of NoMeansNo. The River is an epic song, best listened to at very loud volumes. It has the funky baselines, the sung/spoken lyrics, and all the elements that make us love this band. Cats, Sex, and Nazi's is one of the greats. Why do they call me Mr. Happy? Because I'm so damn smart.

I loved it straight away. By far one of the most under-rated bands of modern times. It's just sad so many are going through life not knowing about NOMEANSNO.

In my humble opinion, there is no single album ever recorded that comes close to the completeness of this record. Absolutely perfect out of the gate, a true roller coaster of sound and emotion, running the gamut from fear and terror, to fanatical love and devotion, this record has it all.

The River probably best stands out as a single, but Mr. Happy should be taken as a complete whole. Although, I Need You is the song to play when trying to win over a woman's heart. Buy a pair of headphones, and buy this record. Listen to it for a weekend. Enjoy.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Why Do They Call Me Mr Happy? (Audio CD)
Damn good album. There is no weak song here, tough Machine is a little hermetic and thus hard to listen. But other songs rock! This album should be viewed like a complete work altough the son gs that stand out are: River, I Need You, Kill Everyone Now, Lullaby and Cats, Sex and Nazis. One of the classic NoMeansNo albums. Others iclude: Wrong, Sex Mad/You Kill Me, The Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie, Live+Cuddly...
