Product Description

SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK MEETS BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY: Roger Day's fourth release of family music "Why Does Gray Matter? And Other Brainy Songs for Kids" features 14 tracks that make innovative use of "the brain" as as theme for every song. "I'm pretty sure it's the first recording session in Nashville that researched Web MD for fact facts," says Roger. "One song "The Brain Train" is even co-written with a college friend, Dr. John-Paul Bouffard, who is a real-life neuropathologist." In fact, The Schoolhouse Rock quality of this project is impossible to ignore and one of its best features. If you didn't hear these songs on this CD first, you might think you knew them from watching cartoons on Saturday mornings years ago. For this reason, Roger's music counts adults as some of his biggest fans. "I've had more than one parent admit they listen to my songs even when their kids aren't around." Roger's hope is that these songs will encourage kids that they have all the answers they need -- right now -- inside their brains. All they've got to do is jump on the "Brain Train", "Get Your Brain in Gear" and start to "Build a Better World. In fact, maybe that's the answer to Why Does Gray Matter? FEATURED TRACKS: SARA BELLUM, THE BRAINY GIRL She's got the IQ of Einstein and can't wait to tackle the toughest questions. THE LEFT BRAIN/RIGHT BRAIN SONG Baroque string quartet on the left meets British Punk Rock band on the right to clear up any confusion about which side does what THE BRAIN TRAIN A tour through Ringo Starr's brain during the nanosecond he thinks about playing his drums to show time. Co-written with Dr. John-Paul Bouffard, MD MONKEY BRAINS A plausible explanation for anyone who's had trouble focusing in class. Which might be Roger come to think of it. BRAIN FREEZE! An important warning about the dangers of the "cerebral-atory" milkshake BRAIN FOOD - EAT IT UP! If the B-52s had a song about the best foods for brain health, this would be it. WHY DOES GRAY MATTER? For such a complex thing, why is my brain such a boring color? INSIDE MY CRANIUM All the hail the prince of procrastination. Eventually GET YOUR BRAIN IN GEAR NASCAR for your brain. CONCENTRATION (TURN YOUR BRAIN) Alice in Wonderland meets Jimi Hendrix SHAKE UP YOUR BRAIN Recording live at Walnut Grove Elementary School in Franklin, TN with The Mosquito Burrito Brothers

Parent's Choice Gold Award winner Roger Day presents Why Does Gray Matter?, a music CD for young people ages 5-11 with a strong positive message: that using their heads to think and reason is very important! The educational songs include fun facts about the functions of different parts of the brain. A catchy way to let young people know that their brains have value and it's OK to be smart, Why Does Gray Matter? is highly recommended especially for public and school library children's collections. The tracks are "Why Does Gray Matter?", "Sara Bellum, the Brainy Girl", "Inside My Cranium", "The Left Brain/Right Brain Song, Brain Freeze!", "Get Your Brain in Gear", "It's a No Brainer", "The Brain Train", "Brain Food - Eat It Up!", "Concentration (Turn On Your Brain)", "Use Your Noodle", "Build a Better World", "Monkey Brains", and the live bonus track "Shake Up Your Brain". 39 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love Roger Day! May 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My 5 year old son loves all 3 of our Roger Day albums and we listen to them all the time. We also have Ready to Fly and Dream Big. Roger Day is great because not only is he very entertaining for kids, he is actually fun for the whole family and easily tolerated by adults. Why Does Gray Matter? is particularly fun because all the songs are in celebration and wonder of the human brain. He is very creative in coming up with so many good songs on this subject! I highly recommend all 3 of the albums that we have, and Gray Matter just might be our most favorite one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of FUN May 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Roger Day is the best kid's musician around. All of his songs incorporate a message, whether it's educational or social/emotional, while being fun and often silly. He believes in kids- all their goodness and potential - and it shows in his music and interactions with his audience. He recently played at the school where I teach. He was not only lots of fun to be around, but genuinely kind and respectful. He took time to meet everyone either before or after the show and actually stayed longer than we expected. His songs are wonderful and his energy is contagious!
