5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Medical Science, February 27, 2008
This review is from: Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis (Paperback)
Dr. Dalman has finally written a book. I am thrilled. After my brother was cured of a nasty end-stage combination of Crons and Ulcerative Colitis,he noticed that his chronic psoriasis went away too. That sparked my interest in Dr. Dalman's work for my own health, since I suffer from that skin condition. I went online and printed out his 30 page report. I learned that the protocol and supplements are almost exactly identical, exept for the fact that I can eat the legume family and raw, cruciferous foods, since I don't have G.I. tract symptoms at this time. On his website, which is very informative, this book was made available. Wanting to know more, I bought it and set out to read and review it.

Dahlman's main focus is to calm down and restore the G.I. tract through a combination of focusing on bacteria (good) and chemistry. To alter these conditions in the colon, it may be seen as a highly restrictive way to live, especially the dietary changes. It's important to remember that they are temporary and a process of elimation to produce the quickest results. He estimates about three months. Apparently, if you get well, you can work back in your old favorities.

He mentions that many of the things we have tried in the past may well have some benefits, but have never been done simultaneously with all his suggestions. He urges us to purify our bodies, so the probiotic supplements, the antiinflammatory drink mixes etc, have a chance to work for you. The dietary guidelines will complement these supplements, which are borne out by nearly thirty years of research. He is not afraid of the complexity of his approach all, and has some sense, one can tell from the dark humour, that he has some dictator qualities. For example, He has four 100% dietary laws and beside them writes: 'don't you dare break them', he says they must be totally followed in order to get a benefit.

Dr. Dahlman definitely has a personality, and while prepared for a dreary read, I was assaulted by his staccato, direct communication style, which I found fast paced and fun. He gets right down to it, which is comforting, since you know he's not whispering sweet alterative health 'nothings' in your ear. His information is not coming out of thin air. His research has been extensive. He means business. His jokes and outlook border on bleak at times, but if you'd seen as much needless suffering as he has in his life, you might have hold some of these dark opinions of the medical field too, which has no cure for these ills. Some of his patients have actually come in in diapers, while other have blood and mucus in their stool. Some can't leave the house for fear of an 'accident,' and are always on the toilet at home. (My brother in law was always on the road, and his life was hell.)Such can be life if you suffer from one of this disorders. If you follow Dr. Dahlman's protocol, you may not have to.

PS. I suggest a trip to the dahlman website for a look at the more simplified, blended supplements available at his on-line store, which is not featured in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The information is helpful., March 3, 2008
This review is from: Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis (Paperback)
The information is helpful. The supplements helped, but did not provide a cure. Therefor I do not believe the supplement treatment to be worth the $885 (3 months). I seemed to get as good a result from Digestive Advantage at $18 (per month, ongoing). I also have learned to stay away from stimulants (caffeine, alcohol) and dairy products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real help & real information; THIS WILL HELP!, January 11, 2009
This review is from: Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis (Paperback)
My eighteen year nightmare is now much better. I personally worked with this doctor and have had the most improvement ever. I still have some symptoms but the improvement is dramatic. Dr. Dahlman knows what he is doing. The book explains everything and is worth every penny. Throw away all other IBS books and follow the plan EXACTLY. You must be committed but it is well worth it. I was afraid that I would be throwing away money on the recommended products but after years of trial and error, this has proven the best. Go to his web site and if possible, make an appointment and work with Dr. Dahlman personally. Well wishes & get the book ASAP. All the literate out there is contradicting and when you're sick, it become overwhelming to make such decisions. I have been to numerous traditional medical & alternative doctors and practioners, tried medication, natural supplement, hypnosis, acupuncture, cleanses, colonics, yoga, as well as over the counter medications and prescriptions. This is the only thing that has helped.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good pointers for identifying diet and intolerances which may be bothering you, May 10, 2008
This review is from: Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis (Paperback)
I believe David Dahlman has a genuine interest in helping individuals who suffer from digestive illnesses. Dahlman's own clinic and his popular website are frequented by those looking for solutions to their illnesses. Those that he has helped are very supportive of his techniques. His book is a culmination of the material that he shares with his patients. I found his book to be well written and a pretty easy read. Although Dahlman is a chiropractor physician, rather than a medical doctor, he writes about many traditional suggestions in his important Step-by-Step Thought Process chapter which you may in fact also learn from a good traditional physician who cares like Dahlman does. Many of his steps center on diet and intolerances that sufferers may not be aware of and also of bacteria levels in your gut that become out of whack. Bacteria levels are a popular mainstream target of investigation right now. He has good pointers for identifying and avoiding intolerances. One major area that he stays away from, in the traditional sense, is the prescribing of medicines and his apparent negative view of the pharmaceutical industry. He believes that the pharmaceutical industry is guessing at ways to mask the symptoms of IBS, without getting to the cause. A true statement, since right now nobody has identified the cause of IBS; however, the pharmaceutical industry in my opinion is just as interested in helping individuals who suffer from digestive illnesses just like Dahlman. Dahlman writes two very useful chapters, Alternative Medicine Techniques to Avoid and Laboratory Tests, both chapters which many IBS sufferers should read so that they may understand the reasons that these techniques and tests may not have provided the results that they were looking for. In summary, I recommend this book and hope that it provides some relief for your symptoms.

This is one of the best GI books I have ever read, also with one of the best titles. I found myself asking the same question when doing alot of research that is sumed up here very well.

The only drawback is sometimes I wish he'd speak in more detail on the topic but he covers so much area in such an easy read I don't see it as a major fault. If your having GI problems that your doctor cant manage this book will either give you the answer or set you in the right direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most helpful book I have seen for Crohn's, October 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis (Paperback)
I bought several books on Crohn's disease from Amazon and I found this to be the most useful.

It will outline a decent diet with supplements for you to take for 3 months (or more.) It greatly lessened my pain.

If you have the money to buy the supplements for this diet, I would recommend it. If you are not going to follow the diet and buy the supplements, this book would not be for you.

The author knows what he is talking about. I have been on this regime for a little over three months and feel 90% better. It will be interesting to see what happens when I add more food items to my diet, which I plan to do next month.

The above reviewer says that the supplements would cost over $800, maybe I did not buy them all but I would say it is over $200 a month with the expensive probiotics.

When I originally went to my gastroenterologist, I told him that it felt as if I had swallowed a cactus, now my intestines just feel a bit tired. I will settle for that.

I hope you feel better. I know how bad this can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Dahlman knows your colon!, February 19, 2008
By
This review is from: Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis (Paperback)
I met David Dahlman at a conference a couple years ago and had the privilege of sharing a meal with him. I came to discover that this man has great insight into the workings of the human body, and he takes an approach to holistic health that departs from traditional medicine. I appreciate when someone thinks outside the box and comes up with solutions that actually work! The medical community is great at placing bandaids, but not always great at getting to the root of the problem. David makes the case that many of the physical ills people face stem from an issue with the digestive system. And not only does he diagnose the problem, but he provides solutions so people can live a healthier, happier life. This book is a must-read for anyone dealing with digestive issues, food allergies, gluten intolerance, lack of enzymes, yeast issues and more. Let Dr. Dahlman tell you what's up with your colon... because your traditional doctor probably isn't giving you the straight poop. ;-) - Joel Comm - Author, The AdSense Code: What Google Never Told You About Making Money with AdSense

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, September 23, 2008
This review is from: Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis (Paperback)
This is a great book! For any IBS sufferers out there this program works! I've only been on the protocol for about two weeks, but I've had a significant improvement in my IBS. Much better than just getting pills from a traditional doctor and "covering up" symptoms.
