I strongly recomend buying this single! Alex Bands voice is so amazing and so good for "Why Don't You and I" and santana is great (as always)! The two play very well together and again Bands voice talent is incredible! If you buy this and like the first song I also recomend Camino Palmero by The Calling (Alex Bands band)

On the CD, the song is sung by Chad Kroeger of Nickelback. Yet I just saw the video today with Alex Band from the Calling. While they both do an awesome job, I have to say I like Alex singing this better. Chad's voice tends to be a bit too much sometimes but he did do an awesome job on this one particular song. Buy them both, it's a great song.

radio version vs. cd version,
By Connie S. Price (Stockton, CA United States) - See all my reviews

I am waiting for my CD as I write this. I heard this version on the radio and fell in love with it and so bought the CD, and like many other fans, was surprised when it didn't sound like it did on the radio, and while I do not necessarily prefer Chad's voice over Alex's (both do a great job)I do prefer the way the song is performed over the CD version, the pacing is different. Anyway, I am so glad I was able to find it at Amazon.com, this after hitting every music store. I wish the recording artists and record companys would stop doing this, it is getting annoying.

I strongly recommend this single. Alex Bands voice is so amazing and it fits perfectly into this song. Santana & Alex have done great job. If you like Santanas and The Callings (Alexs band) songs then you should buy this single. ;)

the way this song was supposed to sound,

I'm astounded at the number of people that think that an upbeat lovesong like this is supposed to be sung with a voice that conveys angst. Gritty is putting it mildly, the album version of this song sounds like Chad Kroeger has bronchitis.. curiously enough it sounds very similar to an audio file that's been run through a heavy sound compression codec, which is to say distorted and overall harsh.
I'm certain that this is the version that Santana would have wanted on the album, but Alex Band of the Calling just isn't as big a name as Chad Kroeger of Nickleback, they needed big names to sell it. So they recorded this altogether better version to play on the radio and in the video to make people think that's what they were getting on the full CD, then pulled a fast one and delivered the bronchitis special edition instead. On the other hand as the other reviews have suggested, if you liked the album version, if you honestly believe that a love song is supposed to be sung with angst.. and.. er.. grit.. then the CD single is probably not for you.

uplifting summer love song,
By
This review is from: Why Don't You & I (Audio CD)
I first heard this song last summer while I was painting our house. Out in the fresh air and the sun (and recently wed), this song immediately caught my attention and only seemed to get more irrestible with every listen. While it's what I guess I would call somewhat of a "rock" song (during the chorus), it's Alex Band's vocals that conveys the longing, passionate love element of the song. He manages to keep it romantic and unique instead of just making it a another decent rock song. I've also heard Chad's version from the album; while Chad's vocals are actually not *that* much different from Alex's (both manage to be very masculine and strong), I feel that the version with Chad is a "good" song while Alex's delivery makes it a "great" song. While Chad's voice is great for other songs, for this type of song it is overly domineering and angry-sounding. From a woman's perspective, Alex's way would manage to convince me to "get together" while Chad's would scare me off! Sometimes, one vocalist is just "meant" to sing a song and either make it or break it. Think of "Smooth" from 1999. Rob Thomas' delivery helped to make that song the hit it was. In this case, Alex is the perfect man for the job.

awww....is Chad Kroeger too gritty for you?,

After listening, with some frequency, to the "Shaman" album, I noticed this song popping up on the radio-waves. Instead of the growling, slightly-angsty version sung by Nickelback's frontman, we get this smoothed-over, watery version that is much more radio-friendly, and is much less appealing.

Great song! I prefer this version,

Don't get me wrong, I dig Chad Kroeger. Dig his voice and songs -- including this one! But when I first heard the song (with Chad's vocal) I thought his voice weighed it down a little. He sounded a little angry -- and isn't this a love song? The rhythm guitar was also mixed a bit too prominently. When I unexpectedly heard the re-recorded version with Alex Band, it sounded "right" for the first time. Alex's vocals really bring out the plaintive, lovesick, and soaring message of the song. The vocal complements the song instead of eating it, allowing Santana's guitar to shine a little more brightly on this version. And whereas Chad's voice pretty much sounds the same on all his recordings, Alex manages a neat trick here in taking on a slightly different persona than the one he uses in his band (the Calling). Finally saw the video after weeks of radio play and thought it suited this version perfectly. Sexy, soaring and sunny. My favorite song of the year. It's a shame this import CD-Single is still one of the only inexpensive ways to get this version though.

Alex sings it NOT Chad,

This is not Chad Kroeger singing this song. It is Alex band from the calling. I love nickelback to death and yes at first I thought it was him too, but it is not. I was actually dissapointed when i found out it wasn't chad, but alex does do a fantastic job singing this song.

I have heard both versions as well and I can honestly say Alex Band's vocals bring this song to life. When Chad's label wouldn't let him do the promo or release the song as a single Chad handpicked Alex to do the song and even produced the track. It was a great choice and I feel had a significant part in pushing the song up in the charts for so long. Alex's voice is not one you can easily ignore or forget.
