I didn't like this album the first time I listened to it. Each time I listened to it I heard more and more to like until I became a fan. The reason is because Ry is a team player. He is more like a Country star who doesn't upstage the band with bombastic guitar solos in every song. I know, the 24 bar guitar solo is a prerequisite to be called rock and roll. Ry Cooder is a grown-up, that is to say he is mature, knows how to write a song and lead a top notch band of equally talented musicians. These guys must be the cream of the crop of the L.A. sessions scene, like Steely Dan used. Most of the guitar heros that I listen to have a tight rythym section that helps show off the headliner's talent. Ry Cooder has his moments, but they are tastful, and not long enough to get tiresome, so the rest of the musicians can have their moments in the spotlight too. This is a concept that I am unfamiliar with in Rock and Roll. It kinda grows on you though.
