Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Nehring, a high school teacher in upstate New York, has insights into the adolescent learning mode that, if universally applied, might reverse the deterioration of public education. Taking his readers through a typical day, a composite of various assignments he has had, he exposes the "tyranny" of the 45-minute class period, the doling out of information to students of divergent attention spans, abilities and backgrounds, the administrative busyness that lends a feverish, ludicrous air to the enterprise of teaching. The remarkably flexible Nehring obviously enjoys his work, deftly illuminating "that elusive point of intersection between student interests and academic aims, that ideal lesson." His day in a suburban public high school as depicted here is colorful and soberingly realistic.

From Library Journal

Nehring, a high school teacher for many years, has written a book about a typical day in a suburban high school. The book combines fine description, giving the essence of teenage life in the Eighties, and thoughtful observation. The evocative scenes of school corridors are so true you can nearly smell them. In the opening chapter, the effects of Walkmans (radios) on the student population is observed. A teacher's meeting is held to discuss the Walkman problem, and different teacher personalities emerge, pointing out the frailties that they, like other professionals, possess. Anyone who has taught will be right at home. Those not so familiar with public schools will be shocked and even chilled by some scenes. No real answers, but an A-1 effort by a heroic teacher/author.

This review is from: Why Do We Gotta Do This Stuff, Mr. Nehring?: Notes from a Teacher's Day in School (Hardcover)
This book is amazing. It really captures the triumph of the human spirit. This book shows in detail what it means to be an art and humanities teacher, the privileges, the responsibilities in imparting such cogent information to young americans. This book is a polished gem... a winner.

It's perfect except to the dedication to his daughter. All I have to say is Error!
