Book Description

June 20, 2005
The news is filled with devastating reports, almost on a weekly basis, of famous men who fall from grace — either morally, ethically, or criminally. Goodall, a pastor and mentor, is fascinated by this modern phenomena, and offers wise counsel for others to avoid the pain of public humiliation and judgment. By focusing on well-known examples, Goodall, through his compelling writing style, points to easily identifiable signposts that trapped “great” men. The profiles in Why Great Men Fall give pause to others in similar environments: corporate execs, ministry heads, even fathers and husbands struggling to maintain their families. Goodall explains why biblical morality is the key to avoiding ethical failure. His thousands of hours of counseling also provide unique insights into the character flaws that contribute to falls from grace. Issues covered inside the pages of this powerful book: Why Great Leaders Fall • Entitlement • Entrepreneurs without Balance • Compartmentalization • Expectation of Silence • The Sex Issue • Integrity • Anger • Accountability • Conscience • Mentors and Coaches • Ethics • Stress and Pressure • Money • Depression and Moods • The One Who Can Keep You from Falling

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Male Christian Leaders, February 22, 2006

This review is from: Why Great Men Fall (Paperback)
Goodall here has the courage to tackle a subject that has been overlooked or unmentioned in Christian books today -- the pitfalls of male Christian leadership. The author directly addresses 15 key areas to which leaders should give attention. From my knowledge and experience of ministry, his words are extremely relevant.

I recommend this book very highly to all male Christian leaders, especially pastors. Being aware of our weaknesses and points of vulnerability is the first step towards safeguarding our integrity. This title is an excellent investment and addition to one's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light before my feet..., February 15, 2010
This review is from: Why Great Men Fall (Paperback)
Why Great Men Fall by Wade Goodall is a wonderful self-help resource for anyone!

I recently received WGMF from New Leaf Publishing Group for review and really enjoyed my read.

Seven years ago I received this book from my Dad as a graduation gift. Now, as a married adult, I've found new perspective for this new stage in life. Goodall goes over 15 different issues that tend to make the greatest of men (and women) stumble and jeopardize or lose the most priceless things to them; jobs, friends, family, and more for a moment of 'gratification.'
Recently Tiger Woods joined the ranks of great men to sacrifice the good in their life for fleeting pleasure. I wonder if he would have received this book or had similar advice given to him, that Goodall writes about, if he could have avoided the pain and misery he is currently going through.
Each chapter covers a different pitfall to be on guard from. Goodall does a superb job of not only providing sources from the secular world, but also biblical examples for us to learn from. The book is full of scripture to show that even God's word desires for us to be upright ethical people.

This is a great read for anyone! Literally, anyone!
We are all human and in need of someone to walk along side us to show us a better way to live. When Great Men Fall is that powerful tool to show us the better way to live!

5.0 out of 5 stars Men need to stand strong!, July 19, 2011
This review is from: Why Great Men Fall (Paperback)
Dr. Wayde Goodall addresses a subject that I wish didn't have to be addressed in "Why Great Men Fall." Unfortunately, we've all seen it; perhaps you've even experienced it firsthand with someone close to you. How tragic it is when we see spiritual, business or political leaders lose their influence in the wake of a devastating fall.

Dr. Goodall pulls no punches as he identifies the things that seem to trip men up time and time again. He looks squarely at the root causes - not just the symptoms - and challenges men to do the same. We're all susceptible to sin and failure. The Bible warns us: "So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!" (1 Corinthians 10:12).

These words from J.C. Ryle are a sober reminder --
"Great falls seldom happen to a saint, without a previous course of secret backsliding. The church and the world are sometimes shocked by the sudden misconduct of some great professor of religion. Believers are discouraged and stumbled by it. The enemies of God rejoice and blaspheme. But if the truth could be known, the explanation of such cases would generally be found to have been private departure from God. People fall in private, long before they fall in public. The tree falls with a great crash, but the secret decay which accounts for it, is often not discovered until it is down on the ground."

"Why Great Men Fall" is not a long book, nor does Dr. Goodall present complicated arguments. It's a straightforward, easy-to-understand diagnosis of the most common things which trip up great men. I cannot encourage you strongly enough to not only read this book, but to read it with a friend who will hold you accountable.

Guys, your family, your church, and your community need you to stand strong!
