Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Why I Kill and the other short pieces in this collection take a look at the forensic pathology of a serial killer, the birth of a serial killer, and finally an erotic investigation of the self, using another as a mirror to the soul.
My longer fiction, Ganglands, Death Call, Damned Nation and Killing a Friend also contain characters with damaged, psychopathic tendencies and a desire for control, revenge and relief. These are crime novels/thrillers, set in the UK and Ireland and Sweden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatility of style May 17, 2011

This collection of short stories is a fine display of literary styles. All three are rich in atmosphere but diverse in tone.

Why I Kill is narrated by a serial killer. It has a visual quality about it; very much like watching a documentary or even a taped confession. It is haunting for its cold objectivity. Groucho Riley is a third person tale of a boy born bad. The tone is less formal, less incisive but no less chilling. Both serve to remind that danger moves around us whether we see it or not and that complacency is a choice we may want to rethink. I'm not an avid reader of this genre but both were well written and impactful.

The third story, Mirror, Mirror, is another matter altogether and made me decide to actually write a review. Taken at face value, it depicts the relationship between an isolated man and an elusive woman: poetic and sensuous and even erotic in the literary sense. It can be enjoyed fully on that level for the language alone but if you are the type of reader who likes to move into a story and take up temporary residence, you'll find much more to feast on. I wouldn't dream of spoiling the experience of reading it for anyone else but will state instead that this will appeal to those who appreciate the opportunity to let their own imagination take flight.

I purchased this collection because I was moved by Killing a Friend - I was fortunate to stumble upon it. I wish that good literary fiction was easier to find in the "e-stacks". If it was, I'm sure I wouldn't be the first to review either of these books.

*This ebook is well edited and formatted.*

Awful. Hated it. Dumb, didn't get the point of it, not interesting, not compelling, had to force myself to finish reading it.

I thought there would be more to this book. It was insightful but still slightly disappointing. I was left wanting more.

The book was very short. It is not a true crime book... so if your looking for that you will be disappointed.
