This is not your garden variety self help book or
relationship guide. No ten step program to instant
and lasting happiness. Instead the author focuses on
the emotional and often hidden lives of men as an
explanation of why love sometimes fails. Lots of good
insights as he peels back the layers of masculinity,
popular culture, and childhood issues. French is
saying that when men begin to be more open and
assertive about their feelings, that's when personal
growth occurs, and their relationships become
stronger. If you're a woman, the message is also
clear: check in emotionally with your man, and check
in often, before he disengages.

This book combines very helpful, prescriptive advice for any couple about keeping relationships alive and fresh, with lots of insights not found in other self-help books about why men lose the handle on relationships and give up so easily. The problem for men is sometimes deep and systemic and pop culture fixes and cliches are a waste. As a woman I found this fresh analysis void of cliches and instead it hits on important truths. Anyone in relationship denial won't respond well to this book, but those with a curious and rational heart will.

What a valuable tool this book is to men and women who discover that the elements that initially attracted them to each other--that caused them to fall in love--are insufficient to sustain their relationship over the long term. The author has managed to get ten sensitive and intelligent men to candidly and fully reveal their innermost selves. We come to understand how the influence of their parents--particularly their mothers--in early childhood, create the needs and desires that lead them to fall in love with the person they have chosen. They are not aware of this at the time, but come to understand it years later as they seek to learn why these needs are no longer satisfied by that person. The analysis after each man's story shows how the understanding of the dynamics of need and attraction presents both the man and his love with the possibility of transforming themselves to adapt to the unfulfilled needs, thus falling back in love and sustaining their relationship. This book offers hope and a path to those struggling to keep their love alive.

Eight weeks ago my husband announced to me that he's not sure he really loves me or that he wants to be married anymore. In complete and utter shock, I was desperate to find answers to the questions he just couldn't answer for me. I found this book and figured it wouldn't hurt to read it. I most love the fact that it is a collection of stories written by men from their own perspectives, interspersed with commentary from the male author/editor, yet is technically FOR women. It isn't a male-bashing book nor does it make women look bad. It's just an honest look at common problems in relationships and ways that hopefully couples can change before it's too late. By the end of the book I began to understand what my husband was going through a bit more, as well as learn some things about myself that I need to change to be a better wife. This book had a lot of "aha" moments for me. I just wish more couples would read it before they end up in our situation.

As a man,I found this book to be extremely insightful... particularly regarding childhood issues and how they affect your behavior in an adult relationship. The complexity of relationships is not something men deal with easily, but this book gives you access points, not just to your own emotions but your partner's also, and provides a number of fixes. After looking at my relationship with my parents, I now have a new perspective into who I am, and why I am that way.

This was one of the best self help books I have read. I think every women, married or unmarried should read this. It really details how different men are to women. Each true story of a guy and his relationship had something of value to appy to the relationships of others. Written from a guys perspective. For each failed relationship in the book, the author offers ways for a potentially better outcome.

As a middle aged man going through what we middle aged men go through, I found this book very informative, helpful, and insightful. In just about each relationship Mr. French covers there are issues these men faced which resonate with my own struggles in relationship. Since men rarely share there true feelings in this area, this book help me to understand that others have the same struggles I do and reveals insights into directions for solutions. I found the author's commentary helpful as well.

In the introduction to Why Men Fall Out of Love, author Michael French declares he's not a relationship expert but a man who has been asked some difficult relationship questions, (by a younger man) probably because he had been "successfully married for many years."

As the author pondered the questions posed, he discovered his own relationship might be in trouble. He sought out self-help books for answers to his own questions and found the number of good books wanting. Why Men Fall Out of Love was born to help men who were struggling with questions about love and relationships.

French learned that men are molded by cultural myths and society's expectations. His research provided him with three basic questions women should ask a man before she becomes involved with him, several reasons why men fall out of love, communication information, four relationship busters, tips and techniques to steer a relationship back on course (located at the end of each section.) and a relationship audit.

French reveals the hidden lives of men through his own story and that of nine other men. They discuss their wants, needs and deepest feeling about relationships

While Why Men Fall Out of Love may not provide all the answers and definitely is not the 'quick fix' that men and women yearn for, it is a road map for couples to begin looking inward as they address the status of their relationship and what can be done to help heal their relationship.

Men who read French's book will know and understand they're not alone in their fears and women who read it (perhaps devour it) will reach a better understanding of their partners.

This book is excellent both in terms of content and construction. Each chapter is a different man's story and reflection of his life and past relationships. Each reflection is surprisingly open and honest. This book is an opportunity for both men and women to question, share and understand what it takes to have a long-lasting, strong, physical and emotional relationship. I highly recommend this book for any individual or couple wanting to explore deeper into their emotional relationships.

I've had lots of women over the years ask me to interpret other guys behavior, and I've steered them towards some books I've read that could help them to understand us. This isn't one of those books. It does provide a look into a FEW men's thoughts; the dangerous thing is, reading this book will most likely cause the women who read it to think they now understand every man's behavior, and that is oh, so incorrect, and can cause as many or more problems as it solves. It was interesting, but take what you learn with a grain of salt, because you're only seeing the tip of the iceberg here. You'll need to do much more research to understand all the possible reasons your mate might fall out of love with you.
