5.0 out of 5 stars The classic breakthrough album, August 31, 2005
This review is from: Why Not Me (Audio CD)
Wynonna (daughter) and Naomi (mother) began their career with a six-track mini-album but this full-length follow-up (including one of the six earlier tracks, Mama he's crazy) was the one that gave them their breakthrough. It features four major country hits - Mama he's crazy, Why not me, Love is alive and Girls night out - together with six other excellent songs including a couple of covers - Endless sleep, My baby's gone - of songs from the fifties.

When I first bought this on vinyl, I played it a lot. Although the style is simple with few instruments, it was (and still remains) fresh and exciting, unmistakeable for anybody else's music. I later realized that one of the features that set this album apart was the prominent use of a dobro - an instrument that traditional country and bluegrass fans are reasonably familiar with, but which is not used as often as it might be. Of course, the excellent mother-and-daughter harmonies and the high quality songs also help to make this album a classic. Apart from a dobro, the only instruments used are buss, drums, piano, steel, harmonica and guitars.

With this album, the Judds became major country music stars. Subsequent albums were also of a high quality, but this remains my favorite original Judds album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only the beginning!, July 28, 2001
By
This review is from: Why Not Me (Audio CD)
This is the album that pretty much jump-started the Judds' career. Previously, they had released a mini-LP simply titled "The Judds," however "Why Not Me" is the Judds' first full-length recording.

This album includes some really great tracks...Especially the title track "Why Not Me" and the gorgeous "Love Is Alive." But the lesser known songs "Endless Sleep" and "Mr. Pain" are also great additions and like every Judds CD, ALL the songs are great..even the ones that weren't released as singles.

This album proved to be only the beginning for the Judds as it scored them their first #1 song "Mama He's Crazy."

4.0 out of 5 stars Applause for the Judds!, May 11, 2000

This is the album where the Judds started it all! Many of their signature songs are on this album such as Why Not Me, Girls Night Out, Love Is Alive and Mama He's Crazy. Even though I love this album, I found the song, Bye Bye Baby Blues, to be a sleeper. Everything else works with me! This album, ofcourse, is probably not as polished as their work became as the years went by but it's the songs on this album that stapled the Judds into country music.

I Love the Judds, and you might as well start from the begining.
This is their first record, and it';s a great showcase for that Family Female Harmony.
If you like Real Country, you should pick this up.
Not B.S. Pop Country, just Old Fashioned Country.

This was one of my favorite albums as a kid. My mom used to listen to it all the time. I just love the beautiful harmonies between Naomi and Wynnona. It doesn't have their big hit "Grandpa" but does include other big hits of theirs such as "Mama He's Crazy". Honestly, though, every song on this album is worth listening to. It's such a high quality album with good songs, good instrumentation (in a simple, traditional style), and above all, excellent voices. Definitely a classic.

Every cut on this CD is good. How often is only one song really good? Not this CD. Every song is worth listening to and enjoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Judds' Greatest Album, August 12, 2004

I remember back in the mid '80s, I drove around many times in my car listening to this tape. Of corse there are the known hits like "Why Not Me" and "Mama He's Crazy", but some of the beauty of this recording is in the lesser known songs like the sobbing tear jerker "Mr Pain" and the toe tapping "Drops of Water" (which by the way has some cool dobro lead).
This version of "My Baby's Gone " was recorded before Sawyer Brown's hit version and in my oppinion, is a much better recording of the song.
I caould say great things about all ten songs on this recording, but just take it from me... If you like the traditional Country sound that became so popular in the mid 1980's, this recording is a must-have.
Buy it.
