Review

“Why ObamaCare Is Wrong for America is carefully researched, well written, and a mustreadfor anyone concerned about the future of health care in our nation. It proves withouta doubt that this law will bankrupt our nation and hurt economic growth.” (Rep. John A. Boehner, Member of Congress)

This timely and lucid book is the thinking person’s answer to two questions: Why is this fight crucial to Americans’ health and America’s civic health? And how can it be won? (Syndicated Columnist George F. Will)

A vital contribution to the ongoing national debate over ObamaCare. What sets this work apart is that it not only exposes the flaws of the new law, but also points the way toward true free enterprise-oriented reforms. (Arthur Brooks, President, American Enterprise Institute)

ObamaCare can be -- indeed must be -- ‘repealed and replaced.’ This invaluable book provides the arguments to win the public debate and replace ObamaCare with a genuine reform that truly delivers world-class health care at a cost we can afford. (Ed Whelan, President, Ethics and Public Policy Center:)

This succinct and lucid summary of the horrors of ObamaCare and what we the people can do about them will be an essential handbook in saving us from medical socialism and bringing true free markets to health care -- which, in turn, will generate more health care at less cost! (Steve Forbes, Forbes Magazine)

At a time when core American principles are threatened on every level, this book will arm you with the knowledge, facts, and insight on what YOU can do to help repeal this bill. (Edwin Feulner, president, The Heritage Foundation)

From the Back Cover

Most people initially had high hopes for health reform. There clearly are problems that must be fixed. The president had promised that if reform passed, everyone would be able to get health insurance, costs would go down, and we would be able to keep both our doctors and our coverage. And we were told that reform would even cut the deficit and make Medicare stronger.

But the law that actually passed became a Rube Goldberg contraption that can’t possibly work and that fails to meet its promises—and it will make many problems worse. Officials say it will leave at least 23 million people uninsured, it is already making health insurance more expensive, and it threatens major changes to the coverage that tens of millions of Americans have today. Seniors are frightened that its cuts to future Medicare spending will jeopardize their care, and taxpayers see a flood of red ink far into the future.

ObamaCare is leaving a comet tail of broken promises as it steamrolls its way through our economy and into our lives. What happened? How could there possibly be such a big gap between promise and reality?

In Why ObamaCare is Wrong for America, the authors—who work for four different conservative think tanks and have led the fight to educate the American people about the impact of ObamaCare—explain exactly what the law stipulates and how the law will affect each of us: as patients, as employees, as taxpayers, and as citizens. They also lay out a plan for reforming the law so we can get health care right. Finally, the authors share concrete steps each of us can take to put the breaks on ObamaCare.

This is a must-read for every single American. As the book states: the scope of ObamaCare is just breathtaking. Every citizen should be informed about the government's unbelievable new power to control the decisions that affect our lives and deaths. New taxes, mandates on individuals and employers and government control over private health insurance: these are just the start!

This book really gets the truth out about ObamaCare. Whether you supported or opposed the legislation, you can't deny the well-documented facts that are in this book. But what I liked the most is that it also recognizes the problems with our health care system and offers solid, practical solutions to reform it--without putting the government in charge.

The book also provides some great resources to get informed and to get involved in the debate. It's good to know that there are ways to reform health care in America that don't involve a massive increase in spending or endangering the doctor-patient relationship.

I highly recommend this book! I thought that I understood ObamaCare and what it meant for me and my family but after reading Why ObamaCare is Wrong for America, I realized I had no idea just how dangerous this law really is. The book's well-written and succinct (but very easy-to-read) chapters outline the impact of ObamaCare on families, seniors, young adults, taxpayers and examined how the legislation impacts my relationship with my doctors and my employer and its affect on my constitutional rights. I was terrified by what I read!

However, the book did not end there. The last chapter provides what I think is the best collection of ideas and action steps that I've ever read on what I can do to stop ObamaCare. I had thought it was a lost cause after the legislation passed last year but I am excited to know that not only can ObamaCare be stopped but I can do something about it!

If you've ever been curious about what ObamaCare is and its impact on your life, then you have to read this book. And if you want to know how it can be repealed and what you can do about it - this is a must read!

Take it from an old school, general internist who eats, sleeps and breaths healthcare reform and has led the creation of several medical companies that are living models of success for healthcare reform from the market place. We don't need more government in healthcare we need very much less. These authors have not only very correctly displayed what is in this bill and why those things actually make our healthcare financing and delivery worse but do so in a practical, understandable manner and with a cadence and style that read very well.

I will be buying in bulk to distribute to my colleagues, patients and friends.

Full disclosure about the reviewer: I lived in Eastern Europe and can attest first hand that Soviet-style central planning DOESN'T WORK! A book such as this one that systematically dissects and exposes the disaster awaiting America in the form of Obamacare is essential reading for any thinking person, whatever your political views and whatever your current opinion of the new Health Care Law. The tidal wave of waivers already issued from compliance with the law should be a dead giveaway to any thinking person that this law is fatally flawed. Read this book and you'll have a detailed understanding of how many ways it is dead wrong for a dynamic, economically healthy and free America.
America is always at its best when sticking to principles of individual freedom and free enterprise. The way forward with health care is true free enterprise, where individuals are incentivised to care about and take charge of their own health. True free markets in health care will deliver better care at lower costs in a way that empowers individuals, not an army of new East German border guards to police every aspect of your life. Obamacare as it stands greatly expands the powers of the IRS to terrorize Americans, while not providing incentives for even one additional doctor to care for Americans' health. Why Obamacare is Wrong for America is essential reading, put it at the top of your list!

If you only have time to read one book on Obamacare, this is the one to read. It not only provides an excellent overview of the law and its major problems, but it offers excellent advice on key changes that could be made to give us better health care at less cost. Bravo to all four authors!

Most of the book is excellent. The critique of Obamacare is detailed and well-referenced. The "Notes" section in the back pages are an essential resource. The chapter "What you can do to put the brakes on Obamacare" is very practical, giving the reader a plan of action.

There are two minor flaws. First, there was hardly any mention or analysis of Romneycare; it is the model of failure at the state level, for which Obamacare will be at the national level. Second, an index is missing!

But there is one section that befouls the book. It is the key chapter, "What we should do instead to get reform right." The authors endorse "The Ryan Roadmap." They claim it'll put the consumer in charge of his own health care, not the government.

Actually, the Ryan Roadmap does not do that! The individual would be given a voucher, not for health care at his own choosing, but for the **insurance company** that will be his new master. In other words, the Ryan plan merely perpetuates the third party payer system (which acts as a gatekeeper between the health care consumer and the health care provider.)

Paul Ryan wants to preserve original Medicare for those born in 1956 or earlier. But for those born 1957 or later, we will be expected to purchase private insurance (with these "premium support" vouchers.) What insurance company would sell policies to old sick people?! It'd be like expecting homeowner's insurance to be sold to a person whose house is guaranteed to burn down within a decade or less.

The authors, Grace-Marie Turner, James C. Capretta, Thomas P. Miller, and Robert E. Moffit -- together with their hero Paul Ryan -- should read the article "How American Healthcare Killed my Father" in the Sept. 2009 issue of **The Atlantic** magazine. (Insurance, by definition, is for catastrophe, not routine care!)
