Book Description

October 28, 2009
"Why I buy real estate instead of golfing" blends a contemporary humorous memoir with a self-help guide for buyers and sellers of real estate. The book covers stories of the school of 'hard knocks' and injects summary lessons and tip lists to help the reader avoid the author's mishaps.

The table of contents lets the reader quickly find a useful topic or tip section whether or not the reader chooses to read the book cover to cover.

This 40 year span of real estate adventures includes personal residential, commercial, residential rentals, and a multitude of experiences that are rarely cited in the many books on the topic of real estate. Topics include properly managing legal issues such as terms and conditions & leases, evaluating financial aspects, taking control of the inspection process, determining conditions before selling, construction tips, managing home inspection engineers, architects, contractors, and neighbors.

The memoirs really serve as powerful case studies. Though humorous, the fact is apparent that throughout the book, failing to follow some of the lessons and tips may be expensive and probably stressful, even for the toughest of readers.

Whether current home owners, first time buyers, professional investors, or realtors, this book will evoke some serious thought for the reader. As a relatively short book, the reader can enjoy some less-than-serious tales that will no doubt be helpful in remembering the lessons and tips and why they were written down. Ideally, the reader will have a smile on their face to go with the memory.

Make this book a must for your reference library and avoid the school of hard knocks in your future real estate adventures. Loan it to a friend and let them enjoy a good laugh at the author's expense. In either case, "Why I buy real estate instead of golfing" deserves a place on your shelf.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Being human, a lot is not said about the problems of owning property because no one likes to admit stupid mistakes. This book is admitting to nearly all of mine. As somebody once said, "If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?". Enjoy the humor! Use the Lessons & Tips!

About the Author

About Len DeWeerdt The author attributes the book's basis to growing up in the "trusting" 1950's in a small central NY village. Trust in real estate is an oxymoron and yet after some twelve transactions, the author is still buying. Despite that fact, Len has been happily married for 35 years, with three great kids and four fabulous grandchildren.

More About the Author

Len DeWeerdt was born in Newark "small town", NY in 1949. Being brought up in the 'electronic media absent' 1950's and being a voracious if not precocious reader as a child, the love of the story and the written word was natural. The author's first book, "Why I Buy Real Estate Instead of Golfing", a late in life effort, gives the reader a look into the author's personality which is squarely split between business matters and monkey business. Today the author is waiting for the current book to become a best seller (highly improbable as that is), inspiration for a next book or possibly stage play, possible discovery as a semi-talented photographer, or the winning ticket from the NYS lottery. With the support of his wife Karen, kids & grandkids, family and friends, it is likely there will be additional books published before senility settles in.

5.0 out of 5 stars A choice pick and well worth considering, January 9, 2010
This review is from: Why I Buy Real Estate Instead of Golfing: A memoir of what not to do in real estate (Paperback)
One is taking a chance at getting something where you want it to go, the other is golf. "Why I Buy Real Estate Instead of Golfing" is a memoir of adventures in real estate from Len DeWeerdt as he reflects on his own successes and follies in real estate, and gives readers much advice on how to succeed where he failed. Hoping to prevent aspiring investors from making the same mistakes he did and learning the hard way, "Why I Buy Real Estate Instead of Golfing" is a choice pick and well worth considering.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Education, December 30, 2010
This review is from: Why I Buy Real Estate Instead of Golfing: A memoir of what not to do in real estate (Paperback)
I've done quite a few deals in my life, from buying foreclosures to syndicating real estate for private investors. But I know that NO ONE stops learning. The author's book is going to be fun and entertaining for anyone in real estate, whether experienced or novice.

Its nice to find a real estate book written on a human level, in a voice that speaks like a friend who's looking out for you.

I'm happy to give this book 5 stars.

As Len says, he has written this book in an effort to help others learn from his mistakes! He is a good businessman with success in many other areas of his life, just not the real estate market! (And, I might add, in golf either!)

Enjoy the humor, but pay attention to the tips and good luck!
