This is Sting's most touching song. His most profound and deepest lament. For he is heartbroken at the loss of his father and in the lyrics that heartache has his soul lost at sea perhaps due to a distant relationship.

The loss of a parent is a painful rite of passage in life and even more so in estrangement. The metaphor of a desolate sea and untrue north denotes the loss of one's compass in life when put in touch with the prospect of mortality.

How can he cry for his dad when he is gone, Sting rejected the life path he had chosen and it is too late to fix loose ties that did not bind or...

Make north be true?

One of my absolute favourite songs ever, simply lush and gorgeous, a beautiful reflection/elegy on his father. Every time I listen to it I hear something new. Easily one of his best songs.
