1.0 out of 5 stars What for? April 1, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Not so much a book, but a booklet. Reading through this "book," I got nothing out of it and was ... well ... a waste of money. The content offered nothing of value - just touting that if YOU want to make any money in photography, wedding's are it. Yes, it worked for him - fantastic. However, the author added no value into what he did to be successful. I'm almost embarrassed to post this to show that I even got "railed" into buying this. But, I'll 'take one for the team' and put this out there as a warning for anyone else considering in purchasing this book ... buyer beware.

3.0 out of 5 stars MISLEADING TITLE February 4, 2013
By Tv
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The title of this book should be how to start a wedding photography business. The book pretty much walks you through the steps that the author used to become a wedding photographer. It is a well written, easy to ready read book and some good info but only for wedding photographers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Padding doesn't make it better. September 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mauro should learn to crop his writing as well as he (likely) crops his photographs. He makes several good points in his book but he could easily have stopped writing half way though. The final chapters became little more than repeat of earlier statements and were not worth reading. "Why be a Starving Artist' doesn't really say anything most artists don't already know. He makes a couple of good points, but that's about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars! January 26, 2009
I am a motivational speaker and writer. I am currently working on a new project for 2009 which will include a book about owning your place at the top regardless of the profession. In my research I came across this book. I feel that Dominick Mauro has achieved this for the photography world and recommend anyone who is thinking of going into this field read this book. Anyone that teaches photography I suggest they make their students read this book and even better yet see if this author is available to speak to your students. It's the mud theory at it's best. Over his career he has thrown mud on the wall and wrote about what stuck and cleaned up what did not. So it only makes sense to study and learn about the things that made him the sucess he is today. I would give this book five stars based on it's detail and direct audience target!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money March 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not a book rather it is a booklet as someone mentioned earlier or a pamphlet. The content is helpful but it is the type of information that is given free when you sign up for a mailing list. Don't waste your money, you will be disappointed UNLESS you are a beginning photographer and looking to enter the Wedding market. Then the questions a potential bride client may ask (and the suggested answers) are helpful and worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn A Hobby Into A Career July 20, 2012
My sister-in-law is a photographer, and occasionally asks me for my business tips, so I read this big with anticipation. Plus it doesn't hurt that the author is from the OC. That's where my wife and sister-in-law are from, so a have some affection toward that neck of the woods.

On to the key takeaways:

1. Throughout - It isn't just text! Love that the author included great photos as examples of work that can be produced.

2. Page 16 - Take it to heart, most of the selling for modern photographers happens without you ever talking to the prospect. Selling happens on line. A killer website showing killer work is key!

3. Page 21 - The job of a photographer is in part recording memories and in part a psychologist. Know how to manage the bride (and groom).

4. Page 27 - An example of a highly effective ad that anyone can "duplicate" by using their own best photo.

5. Page 31-32 - How to plan for growth. This is a MUST READ section.

6. Page 42 - Living the 2 day work week.

This book is not a thick, heady read. It serves as a booklet that cuts right to the chase. Well worth the investment. Plus I look really smart in front of my sister-in-law now!

This book was really easy to read. I read it in one go. It is written in an easy to understand English. The author describes how to start photography business, what to look for and how to gain the confidence in what you are doing. Recommend it to all artists who want to get paid for whatever they are doing specially for wedding photographers.
