2.0 out of 5 stars Informative but lacking
First off I will say this book does an excellent job of proving, as the title says, why stomach acid is good for you. Almost the entire book is devoted to explaining it. I have already suspected almost everything it discussed so that was no surprise.

What I really wanted to know was how to fix it. Throughout the course of the book the authors hint about...

5.0 out of 5 stars End Antacid Dependency, February 3, 2008
This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
A new remedy came on the market promising 14 days of heartburn relief. I rushed to the drugstore the day it hit the shelves. As advertised, I had 14 days of blissful remission.

My suffering relieved, I relived the days when heartburn was impossible. There was a time I could gulp jalapeno peppers like candy. I could eat a double order of Nick's Famous Coney Island Dogs piled with onions, washed down with a (small) pitcher of beer. I laughed at heartburn.

When the 14 days ended, the heartburn returned with a vengeance, worse than ever. Warning labels proscribed continued use of the remedy. There has to be a better way, I concluded, and started researching heartburn online. This book turned up among the search results.

Following the book's advice, I swallowed a spoonful of fresh lemon juice to combat an attack of heartburn. The lemon juice caused some alarming turmoil in my stomach, but the heartburn subsided. I had some lemons on hand, so I squeezed them into glass bottles of drinking water. I put the juice of half a lemon in each quart bottle.

For the next few months, I drank lemon-spiked water. The heartburn abated from day one. I didn't need to take the acid tablets the book recommends.

I am a beer and coffee lover, so there were occasional flareups. I might forget to take the onions out of my gyro. I fought these flareups with chewable papaya enzyme tablets, which work better than any antacid.

My shopping habits changed. Instead of buying antacids in jumbo bottles, I bought lemons by the 5-pound bag. I squeezed one or two lemons a day into my drinking water.

Eventually, water didn't taste right without lemon. I ended my lemon water addiction. In 3 years, the heartburn has not returned. I've been working on the same bottle of papaya enzyme while eating and drinking practically anything I want (except onions).

I've had a puzzling response from fellow sufferers when I have suggested this book. People don't want to hear about it. They get the idea that it's some kooky, possibly dangerous, health fad. Strangely, they seem reluctant to give up their trusty antacids. They'd rather keep fighting a losing battle than take a chance on a simple cure that sounds counterintuitive. MORE stomach acid will cure heartburn?

I consider myself lucky to be open to alternatives. I turned to this book only because I was so fed up with years of riding the antacid merry-go-round. If you are serious about ending antacid dependence, this book has the answer.

You have to be patient while the authors lay out their theories and research findings. For the doubting medical community and readers leery of jarring unconventional ideas, the authors take several chapters to make their case.

Actual advice for heartburn sufferers can be summarized in a few pages. A few pages that can make your life a whole lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book shocked me, January 6, 2005

This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
A great, great book. I stopped taking my Prevacid before I finished the second chapter. Dr. Wright exposes how the medical profession treats the problem of a little bit of stomach acid in the wrong place (your esophagus) by almost completely neutralizing your stomach acid with powerful drugs. But without stomach acid, you can't absorb nutrients properly, and you can't prevent bacteria growth in your stomach! Thank God I found this book, or I would have taken those pills forever, and my symptoms weren't even that bad. I needed to change a few eating habits, not get rid of stomach acid forever. I was honestly taken aback that doctors could be so ignorant of the importance of stomach acid for your health, and so willing to casually prescribe a powerful (and profitable) pill to simply make the symptoms go away without treating the cause.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indigestion is most often caused by too little acid!, July 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
Hard to believe, but true - at least in my particular case and, in the authors' opinion, about 90% presenting with indigestion.
After being warned by a pediatrician about the high incidence of stomach cancer among patients taking acid suppressors, I scoured the health food stores and web looking for alternative therapies until finally finding Dr. Wright's & Lenard's book.
They explained in detail how the stomach and, by extension, the whole body, are severely compromised by low stomach acid. The doctors expose the drug companies - who have known since the 1800s that the symptoms of low stomach acid mimic and are much more common than those attributed to too much acid - for the greedy pushers that they are.
The doctors warn of an impending stomach cancer epidemic and other related health problems if the drugs that are currently dispensed like candy (and are amazingly available over the counter) continue unfettered.
In my own personal experience, I have been under treatment for GERD and heartburn for over 10 years with typical emphasis on acid reduction, e.g., Prilosec, Nexium, and a lot of Rolaids. I was off drugs the same day I received this book and feel much better by taking over-the-counter supplemental acid and pepsin.
No doubt the drug companies will attack the truth here. There is a lot of money to be made by selling expensive products that at once reduce and yet sustain the indigestion symptoms daily until the patient eventually dies.
This information is a lot like that of Australian medical researcher Dr. Barry Marshall, the man who was ridiculed but later vindicated for discovering that the cause of many ulcers is a helicobacter pylori bacterial infection. While initially controversial, this book will hopefully similarly end up changing the dependence on dangerous acid-reducing drugs and save lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars knowledge is only powerful when put into action !!!!, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
This book is highly informative. It describes digestion/ stomach acid process, ideal acid level(s), numerous disorders / symptoms of too low of stomach acid, and why ACID BLOCKERS are actually TOXIC / DANGEROUS (like Prilosec / Tums) to ingest regularly or indefinitely.
This book also describes how you (the reader) can remedy most of the disorders naturally which are associated with low stomach acid, and if not what tests to take, what to ask your doctor or gastroenterologist, and where / whom to contact for referral.
Some disorders covered are: Heartburn, Reflux, GERD, Pernicious anemia , Asthma, Rheumatoid arthritis, Depression, Acne rosacea, Celiac disease, Diabetes I, Graves' disease, Lupus, Osteoporosis, Multiple sclerosis, Macular degeneration, plus many more.
This book is valuable to the individual that wants answers to UNRESOLVED personal digestive health questions and / or related symptoms or wants to be independent of the OVER-PRICED pharmaceutical (toxic) legal drugs which seem create additional health problems and require more drugs, which in turn creates an endless money pit for the individual and BIG profits for the drug companies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartburn Cure on the Horizon, December 11, 2002
This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
I'm 32 and have had heartburn since I was a teenager. I controlled it with TUMS. A year ago I finally went to a GI doctor and he immediately prescribed Prevacid. It worked great. I could eat anything, even my favorite pepperoni pizza. After a year on the drug I decided to quit cold turkey. I didn't want to have to take this drug the rest of my life especially after hearing some of the possible long term side effects (stomach tumors). I had horrendous heartburn non stop for 2 weeks. I stuck with only Tums to help ease the pain. I got to thinking that something else might be going on. I called my sister who worked at an allergy clinic. She had me come in to speak with the doctor. He ordered Food Allergy tests. Sure enough... Dairy, Tomatoes, Corn, Peanuts. At about the same time, I found this book. This book explains why that it is very probable that I got these food allergies from STOMACH ACID SUPPRESSION. It also explains why I could have low stomach acid which might be the cause of my GERD. It could also explain why I have had acne since I was a teenager. It's all exposed in this wonderful book. This is no joke... I now believe I will find out soon when I get my allergies under control that STOMACH ACID IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-altering advice!, December 7, 2005

This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
This is an incredibly helpful book. Not only do the authors explain just how the stomach and GI system is supposed to work, they make a stunning case for how 21st century pharmaceutically-driven medical practice is completely off course when it comes to treating common digestive problems. The authors offer a range of good practical suggestions on how to manage your symptoms while encouraging your stomach to function normally again.

I suffered from heartburn for 20 years and had the symptoms of low stomach acid for 5 or more years which was never properly diagnosed. Since reading this book and following the authors' advice, I have not taken any stomach acid suppressors for over a year now--I now have no heartburn, no gas, and no pain. Yes, it's possible! Do yourself a huge favor and read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple test to see if this book will help you., March 23, 2008
This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
The theory in this book is that most people have too little stomach acid and that antacids not only do not help you but they make the problem much worse. So here is a simple test to try if you want to see if you have too little stomach acid. The next time you feel the need for an antacid mix 2 parts standard vinegar with 1 part honey. Then take two tablespoons. If you have too little acid the vinegar will help and you will feel better. If you get worse than you probably have too much acid and you can go ahead and take your antacids. I now keep a bottle of this vile mix in my fridge and I no longer take antacids. It is nasty to take but it works like a charm, every time! If you find out you have too little acid then you should buy this book immediately and read it cover to cover. They suggest using lemon juice at meal times to help replace the acid you need. Much better than taking vinegar too! There is so much good information in here that you do not want to miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read health book, October 22, 2003
This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
The title of this book is a bit deceptive. The authors use a combination of exisiting medical literature, clinical experience, and common sense to make the point that a stomach that is not functioning properly is associated not just with stomach problems, but with many other medical problems as well (e.g., depression, autoimmune diseases, asthma). If you only read one book about health or nutrition in your life, this should be the book you read. My only criticism of this book is that although they provide links to organizations with doctors who might test your stomach function, there is no link to any list of doctors who definitely will do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!, April 3, 2008
This review is from: Why Stomach Acid Is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD (Paperback)
I was lucky and found out about this book from doing research about acid reflux. I immediately ordered the book and read it in one night. I told my husband that this has been my problem all along. I have too little stomach acid! I have been plagued with acid reflux for the last 17 years(I am now 38 yrs old). When I would wake up in the morning, I would have a burning feeling in my esophagus even while taking the well known proton pump inhibitors. I had no energy and I really felt like I wasn't going to live much longer. I immediately flew to Dr. Wright's clinic and was tested there when they confirmed moderate hypochlorhydria. With everything they have recommended, I can't believe that I am no longer plagued with acid reflux. In addition to the low stomach acid, I was very ill with severe yeast overgrowth throughout my body and I wasn't assimilating any vitamins or nutrients. I thank God for Dr. Wright. I will be on his treatment plan for a year (currently it's been 6 months)and then will get re-tested to see if I am finally producing enough stomach acid on my own to help digest my food. Over the past 17 years, I have had many tests run on me by the Gastroenterologists. I never could get an answer as to why I had acid reflux. I was simply told to keep taking the proton pump inhibitors. If you are suffering from acid reflux,
do yourself a favor and get this book!

I am a current patent of Dr. Wright and have read his book after my stomach acid was tested ,as outlined in the book, and showed to be extremly low. I have been following the guidance outlined and under Dr Wrights guidance and feel better. No more bloating after a meal and more stable energy through the day. It is too bad most doctors do not check their patents stomach acid level before prescribing medication. As outlined in this book, digestion is not the only problem associated with low stomach acid.
