5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I wish I had thought of this idea. As you are traveling through Texas, just look up the roadside markers in the area by city or county. You can learn so much, and you don't have to take the time off your trip by stopping when you don't want too. It makes a long trip across Texas, or just sitting in your living room, a good time.

I thought it would be more up to date but it isn't. There were numerous historical markers that were not noted. Maybe they have come out with a more up to date one. Otherwise the book is informative.

To the review that says it needed a map, yes it could have. It likely would have added a lot of pages and cost to this book. Can you imagine trying to have a detailed map for the backroads some of these markers are on? For the rest of us, the book explains clearly the location in relation to highways and roads for each marker. Just look up the highways and roads on your own map if you want to go there, and you can get there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Texas Historical Landmarks at 75mph, December 26, 2000
By
This is an excellent book to have in your car as you drive across Texas. As you drive up on a Historical Landmark, your passanger can quickly find the description in the book and you won't have to slow down. Thousands of Landmarks are referenced. A must have for the long treks across Texas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just plain perfect!, December 27, 2005

I am so excited that I found this book. When traveling through Texas, I am always interested in the Historical Markers. However, I have a husband that drives from point A to point B, without any stops in between! Because of that, I have asked for a book that would have everything listed that I am always wanting to stop and read. I finally found this book and could not wait to get it. It came just in time for Christmas and one of our annual road trips! No complaints! Perfect in every way. Certainly worth the money, and easy to read. Very to the point, so if you want to read more on the historical marker...do the research! Thank you so much for taking the time to write a book like this and making my life so much easier!

I was amazed at the number of markers in our state, and no longer have to wonder what the sites are noted for. I have traveled Texas roads all my life, and wish this book had been with me from the beginning: I would know a lot more Texas History!
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep it in your vehicle!, February 18, 2007

This book has an alphabetical listing of the city or towns where the markers are located, with addresses or locations of each. This makes for much easier locating when you drive by a marker. My husband & I RV a lot and we keep it in our vehicle -- when we see a marker, I grab the book, look up the marker, and read the information aloud. If anyone's interested in the history of Texas, this would be a great book to add to one's collection of historical books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, December 26, 2011

Just what I wanted. As we drive down the road, I am able to look up the historical markers without stopping. The only downside is the book is not complete.

As a native Texan who has been all over this big old place, I have always been curious about all the historical markers. However, life, time restraints, and a family have kept me from stopping to read very many of these. Now I can read all about them anytime and anywhere. I love the book. Thank you to the authors for their life long work and for sharing this treasure.

2.0 out of 5 stars It needs either more or less, June 22, 2011
This review is from: Why Stop?: A Guide to Texas Historical Roadside Markers (Why Stop? Texas Roadside Markers) (Paperback)
The first thing I wanted to do when I got this book was look up historical markers near my hometown and my current city. I was disappointed to find that the book did not include any of those markers. I learned after-the-fact that the book contains only about 2,500 of the 11,000 historical markers in the state (the numbers are from memory, so may be off).

So the book is not comprehensive enough to be a good reference guide, but it is also too reference-like to be readable as a book. It needs to be one or the other. If it is not going to be exhaustive, then there should be some editorializing, with actually fewer markers included (the most interesting or unique ones, with maybe a comment about each). But I guess that's just a different book altogether.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs a cross reference, December 22, 2010
By
This review is from: Why Stop?: A Guide to Texas Historical Roadside Markers (Why Stop? Texas Roadside Markers) (Paperback)
The usefulness of this book would be greatly increased by some sort of cross reference. The markers are listed by nearest town and the "town" might be a tiny village or lost to history. The actual location is given on the same line. A cross reference in the back using that same information, as for instance by major highway, "US 287 South of Wichita Falls, see page XXX" would be very helpful.
