This book is actually the theoretical basis of a complex computer controlled personality test called the MAP (Murray Appraisal Process) that is interactive and takes about an hour to complete. The author uses the MAP in conjunction with a live interview in his consulting practice to evaluate senior executives and determine their cultural fit and personality. This was developed after years of using standard psychological tests based on normal trait theory that yielded marginal results.
From the Author
I was born and raised in New York and always wondered why people did what they did. However, I liked science and became a chemical engineer, joined Procter & Gamble but enjoyed the people and politics more than making toothpaste. I went back to graduate school and finished my PhD in clinical psychology where I now had some words to describe what I saw everyday in the streets of New York. For five years, I saw patients and worked in areas as diverse as a VA Hospital drug unit to an upscale practice owned by a psychiatrist. I grew tired of the abnormal personality and wanted to use my knowledge to help normal people in an organizational setting where people confusion seemed rampant and created so much unnecessary stress. I finished my MBA and 15 years ago started my own practice helping normal people understand each other better so they can get the job done and enjoy life. This book is what I have learned and I wish that someone else would have written it, because it would have saved me so much time.
