This book is for the people who have tried many diets to no avail and are still very serious about lossing weight to improve their health. The book is not for the person who wants to loss 15 pounds is 15 days (no diet no recieps). For the people (like myself) who have tried many diets and still have not lost weight this book is very helpful. It identifies various health problems and biochemical factors that can hender your weight loss and informs you about what questions to ask your doctor and what lab work would be helpful in identifing and correcting these problems. If you are willing to work on your life style and other health problems that you need to address before you focus on weight loss, then this is the book for you.

Nothing new here. Anyone who has been fighting the weight loss battle would have heard it before. I too was disappointed about all the testing. Doctors resent being told what tests you think you need. Also, in the kindle edition, the charts were impossible to read.

To the other reviewer- Of course you can lose weight without visiting your doctor for a bunch of tests. The author does suggest that you could go get some tests done [and she let's you know which ones would be most beneficial and why] but I did not read that she urges one to do so.
I have done a lot of research but still felt this book was helpful in that it does list many troublesome "disorders" of the body that can lead to weight gain and difficulty losing it. What I especially like is that for every problem, such as Insulin Resistance or Thyroid Dysfunction, there is a chart with supplements and herbs that are helpful for correcting each situation. She also shares how many of the disorders work together to cause gain and how to overcome the problem (s). This is not a quick-fix diet book, but more of a a guide to rebuild health so your body can get to a healthy weight. I would recommend this book.

This is a good PRIMER book on reasons your body likes to put weight on and not lose it. If you've already done a lot of research on the internet, or read other books about weight loss, you probably won't learn anything new in this book (I didn't). If you're a career dieter who has never truly researched weight loss, this would probably be a good intro to reasons your body is stubbornly holding onto the pounds.

Don't expect any miracles here-- it's a very straightforward listing of typical reasons for weight gain. Solutions? Not really. Pretty much "Go and see your doctor" is the answer in every chapter. Get bloodwork/labwork done.

Again, this is a primer. For a newbie into weight loss research, it would definitely be a helpful guide to know what to ask your doctor to check for, as well as some good common sense ideas of how you can change a few lifestyle choices to help you shed those unwanted pounds.

I'm always fascinated reading new books that address the topic of weight loss and noticing they totally ignore the elephant in the room--CARBOHYDRATES! While not everyone is sensitive to carbohydrates and need to reduce them, a great number of people do. The author does address carbs, but thinks it is only about controlling simple carbohydrates and pushes the glycemic index. UGH! That is so last century now as we've learned more about what these do in the body metabolically. Until this information is shared, then the answer to the question WHY YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT will never be addressed.
