This book gave me a huge wake up call and support at the same time! I read it more than once. The first time I read this, I felt as though I was reading my own life story! This book allowed me to take a step back and actually see what was happening in my marriage, and that I could obtain the strength to change what was happening to me. And I most certainly did! I was not going to tolerate his emotional and mental abuse any longer!
I highly recommend this book to anyone doubting their spouse's or partner's behavior towards them. Know you can change how you are being treated and you deserve nothing but respect and love from the person you are spending your life with-absolutely nothing less! Many kudos to this author!!

This book is lengthy and well worth every minute. Although I book marked and highlighted so many paragraphes and sentences....too many to count....there were still sections I did not. The great thing about this is- I feel very confident that my husband is an abuser. After 22 years of marriage, my unfortunate eye opener came with a culmination of physical abuse as a result of me standing up to him when he violently disciplined my son for lying. He lost control and I gained the strength to say no more. I have been reading as many books on abuse that i can possibly get my hands on. This is the only one I have highlighted and thought about suggesting my husband read (not really a bookworm). He voluntarily left our home after it happened and all that I have been going through since has been validated after reading this book. Cindy Burrell and her book have given me the courage to know what I need to do and take each step I feel comfortable with. Many of my supporters are judgemental with their advise. One even claimed to renounce her friendship if I did not go full speed ahead with the total legal destruction of my husband. I can tell anyone, although it is out of concern for me, this did more harm mentally to me than what my husband physically did. If you are supporting a friend through this, please listen and guide do not tell your friend they need to meet your standards of retribution or support and friendship will no longer be there. That is why this book has been a godsend to me. I know what I need to do and I can now feel confident that if I don't stoop to his level, I am not weak but doing what I need to in order to heal myself. Anger only begets anger.Read more ›

This book has been an amazing wake up call for me. Although I had already left my abuser, this book put an end to the self doubt I had been struggling with.

Explains the characteristics of abusive men. I especially like the title because I found myself asking it several times throughout our 20 year marriage. I was lost for so long, unaware that I was being abused until now. Thank you so much Cindy for encapsulating and defining cruel behavior and helping women like myself know that we are not alone.

This book has excellent insight to answers that many women may be struggling with. The author truly makes it easy to understand the different issues and offers help to the reader. A lot of us always "blame" ourselves for when things are not going right. This book empowers women.
