Product Description

This Whynter Portable Fridge/Freezer offers premium quality and innovative design to your frozen and refrigerated needs. This freezer is great for RVs, boats, campsites and fishing trips and truly portable so you can take your fridge or freezer anywhere. All you need is either a standard household 110 Volt outlet or a 12 Volt power source, like an automotive battery. Whether on a day trip or major expedition, you can easily keep your food and beverages chilled, or frozen with this benchtop freezer. The Whynter portable freezers should not to be confused with less effective 12 volt novelty and beverage type "coolers". The Whynter portable freezer fridge is a true freezer/refrigerator which cools between -8°F to 50°F. A cost effective and mobile solution for your recreational and critical freezing requirements.

I waited to write this review until I had some experience with the product. Have now used it for five different trips dry camping with ten to fourteen people. Each time I used it as a freezer. I have to admit I am extremely impressed with its performance! It usually runs about eighteen hours off of a 100 amp hour deep cycle battery plugged into directly with 12 volt. This allows me to recharge the battery via my generator for approximately 4hrs daily. My fellow campers were surprised that I was able to serve ice cream several days into our trip! And no more trips to get $4 a bag ice in remote areas. I have found that for best results to start the freezer the day before you plan on leaving, pre freeze anything you plan on bringing. This unit will go from ambient temperature to -8 degrees F. in less than two hours. When I convert to DC from AC, I adjust the temp. up to 8 degrees F., and it cycles between 7 to 13 degrees F. This reduces the load off of my house battery. When I get into camp, I take it off the house battery and use a second deep cycle to run the freezer. I bring along a battery charger to charge the freezer battery at the same time I charge my house battery. Hint: You can plug both DC & AC cords at the same time. When the generator is running it defaults to AC and the battery will charge faster. Exceeds all of my expectations!

I needed a powered cooler for the truck, and after hunting around found this one and ordered it. It's a fabulous full-featured refrigerator/freezer. Whether on AC power or DC from the lighter socket in the truck, it runs as you'd expect. It's also pretty quiet. Some people may balk at the price, but I have to say so far this has proved to be a great investment.

I recently got hit with a series of heart attacks and was diagnosed with Diabetes (type 2). After spending 3 long weeks in the hospital- went home and began a PBD (Vegan diet) based on the regiment of the book: "The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle" (EXCELLENT BOOK!)

Being on this diet requires lots of veggies/beans/fruits/soy products/flax seed and nuts etc etc. After stocking our fairly large fridge in our kitchen- we found that it was just too crowded and not wanting to travel every other day to get my foods stuff- I decided we needed another fridge- but i did not want to clutter the kitchen or any open area we had available with another bulky upright fridge. So I decided to look into a "horizontal/top opening" fridge that could fit in a recessed area we have between our kitchen and bedroom- problem is that the most of the ones out there are considered "beverage fridges" and are quite large and expensive: $1500.00+ !!! (we have one at our summer home on our deck that came with our house) The other problem with any beverage fridge is that THEY ARE NOT RATED FOR FOOD!
So, my next solution was the Whynter 85Qt portable Freezer/Fridge- which I found here on Amazon at the best price.
My wife kept telling me its "too small" and just a "glorified electric cooler"... But I proved her wrong!

With all the food stuff in the kitchen fridge- it was hard to organize it and remove things easily-- but the Whynter 85Qt allows for easy access and can be organized so that I can remove any pre-cooked meal stored in a container or any plastic bag of veggies or fruit, without other stuff tumbling out of the fridge (BTW my wife is an "organizing expert" and our Whirlpool still got cluttered!

Refrigerator is going on 3rd year and is still working fine. I use when camping or travelling on vacation so refrigerator really only gets used about 6 weeks a year. My only complaints are there is no recessed loop to allowing you to run a cable through (to lock in place) as well as handles are cheap plastic and will break no matter how careful you are. You can pack the refridgerator full and travel half a day with internal temperatures only rising to low 40's. If I needed to keep unplugged longer while travelling I would just put a frozen bottled water or two in with everything else. This thing is insulated fairly well.

You can get replacement handles, that actually work, from tchweb; I don't want to post full link as I am unsure if Amazon strip review or remove link. Do a search on "large surface mounting handles without holes". Expect to pay about $34 for the pair plus $10 shipping and another $20 for a machine shop to drill holes into these stainless steel handles (I did not buy the aluminum).

You can't go wrong with this deep freeze. It runs on 12/120 volts, so it's ideal for the basement of my motor home. It has not skipped a beat in almost 2 years of use. I highly recommend it.

we use this as a 12 volt unit off solar array in the van. It it so nice to have. I started with the 65 QT and now bought the 85 QT I like the little higher model with the same footprint. I did call customer service on the 65 QT unit and they were so nice when talking us through some loose wires. Highly recommend this brand

The fridge/freezer is great, but the handles will not last. Be prepared to buy replacement handles, and often. They are not cheap either - about US$18 each, plus shipping.

I would expect to be able to lift this fridge by the handles when it is full, but they broke when I moved an empty fridge.

Whynter don't give two hoots and simply refer you to their website where you can order replacements.

I've also had to replace a hinge, which are made from the same material as the handles.

EDIT: I've now read several reviews and the weakness of the handles is mentioned often.
