...but once you get the thing set up properly, it works like a charm. Now, maybe my situation is a little different than most, so I'll give some background. I already have a wireless router, and I've used it to connect online with my PSP many times. But my router is incompatible with a program I was trying to use, called Kai. Kai basically imitates a single wireless source for ad-hoc multiplayer functionality. Anyone can connect his/her PSP, xbox, PS2, etc. to a computer, run Kai, and play ad-hoc games with people across the country, or even the world (region coding issues excluded). It's quite something. Anyway, the catch is most wireless routers do not support this program, but WiFi Max does! I read the bad reviews, but bought it anyway, and figured I could just return it if I couldn't get it to work right. And there were many times where I came very close to doing so. But, using the forum on Kai's website, I was able to follow Kai-specific set up instructions to get my PSP online, rather than using the booklet. Well, long story short, I got it to work, and I've had no problems ever since. I have never lost my connection, maintain a high bandwidth, and enjoy myself immensely playing Killzone: Liberation deathmatches all night long! So, for people who want to do something like this, look into it: it's worth it. For everyone else? If you have time and access to message boards, I think you'll be just fine. But you may want to stick with a general router, depending on the intended application. Happy shopping!

The Datel Wifi Max is a USB product that plugs into the back of your pc and basically uses your pc's internets and transmits it into a wireless hotspot in your home or wherever you play your psp at.to be honest the downloadable cd that came with it is pretty useless i.e the media manager and the drivers that come with it to make it work dont work with it. however there is a website called xlink kai that has up to date drivers and instructions on how to properly install them, and configure the drivers so you can use the wifi dongle to play your psp with other people around the world, and protect your internet hotspot from other people trying to use it.
xlink kai is also is a gaming community where people with psp's and other systems that can use wireless connections to play with other people around the world easily, safely, and mostly hassle free. if you followed their instructions on their forum on how to install the drivers etc, etc, you will have no problem being able to play with other people using the program they have created.
overall the product is very usefull but the cd that comes with it isn't if your a gamer and want to play with other people in the world without going to a hotspot i would definately reccomend picking this up and installing xlink kais program with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Purchased To Play MHF2 Online with Xlink Kai, May 2, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: WiFi Max (Video Game)
First of all, I would like to clarify to anyone looking to purchase this product by saying that this product ONLY works as a router if connected to a computer with an internet connection (Ethernet or wireless). This product works as an access point readable by a Sony PSP. For what it is meant to do, it does extremely well with no problems or complications. That is not to say, however, that the other components involved worked well or were easy to deal with. Setting up this product requires a lot of patience. Be cautious when buying this product because it involves a moderate amount of computer knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm, A+, April 7, 2008

I could not be more happy with the performance of this little doodad. Of course, you buy the right tool for the right use, yes? Well I baught this little guy so I could play Monster Hunter online with people across the world. And it does just that without a hitch.
Notice, folks, that the things other customers bought were copies of Monster Hunter. This is not meant for general PC wireless use, and I will never attempt to use it for such, because you use the right tools for the right job. Below is a guide to play MH online with your shiny new WiFi Max, which wil also work for any other LAN-only PSP game. (But 95% of the players connecting to the XLink Kai network are all there for Monster Hunter)

PLEASE if there is anything you get out of this review, use your 40 bucks and get a wireless router, the wifi max for me and a whole lot of other people has been a pure nightmare. Why? Because there is just no ryme or reason to how this thing works fine one minute and the very next doesnt. After installing it exactly as the manual states I couldnt get it to connect my psp to the internet as it couldnt find the ip address. After using the tips from codejunkies.com still no good. After reading tons of forum threads and trying everyones suggestions I got up and running, that is untill I turned off my PC for the day. The following day when I booted back up I was back to square A again. This USB dongle makes a great back scratcher and the included USB cord can always be used to hang yourself after loosing your mind in frustration. Datel offers horrible customer service,go to there website read their little trouble shoot guide cause thats all your ever gonna hear from them. STAY AWAY!!!

If you're looking for "plug and play simplicity", keep looking!! The software didn't recognize the hardware. The manufacturere's website listed some ways to almost get this to work. Sadly, almost is the closest I came. I e-mailed customer support and just got a response.Too late, this one's going back.

Unlike the original model, the new revision of the Wifi Max is incompatible with Xlink Kai, a program that allows you to play Ad Hoc PSP games over the internet.

I don't understand it. We have kids at the age of 8 that can hack another computer, yet we still have people that cannot get this simple piece of hardware to work. Its always two simple problems, their anti-(X) software gets in the way or they just never clicked the box to share and internet connection with other computers allowing the dongle to work properly.
