Book Description

November 13, 2009 True Crime
'If I should be missing inquire of the Rev. Mr. Avery of Bristol. He will know where I am.'

This scribbled note belonged to Sarah M. Cornell, written the day her body was found hanged in a rural pasture in Tiverton, Rhode Island. An unmarried young woman of limited means, Sarah was four months pregnant, and a married Methodist minister stood accused as the father. Local authorities grew skeptical of Sarah's apparent suicide as Reverend Avery's conduct appeared increasingly suspect, and eventually the extensive evidence of their tortured relationship set off a groundswell of public interest and media attention never before seen in 1830s New England. This tragic crime left the nation clamoring for justice and became one of early America's most sensational murder trials.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! August 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
I absolutely love reading local history and was never aware of this story, despite my husband being from Tiverton. This book is excellently written and I was constantly captivated. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Raven!

4.0 out of 5 stars The OJ Simpson trial ofiv the 1830's January 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
Very nice writing by Mr. Raven. It starts with the finding of the body on a farm in 1831. And like the town people of Fall River, Massachusetts, we gradually learn more about the victim and the accused. And like the OJ Simpson trial, lots of people took sides, and the media of the day did everything they could to sell more. You really don't know how it is going to end, either. Great research, highly recommended.
