Book Description

Savannah Reid Mysteries February 1, 2010
Dr. Robert Wellman claims his breakthrough hypnosis techniques can help anyone shed unwanted fat in record time. But while countless weight-challenged folks have flocked to his popular clinic, most have only lighter wallets to show for it. Still, Dr. Wellman seems to have it all, until his wife Maria is found dead at the bottom of a cliff outside the Wellmans' seaside estate - and it's clear she didn't go down without a fight. Savannah is more than happy to help her good friend, Detective Sergeant Dirk Coulter, investigate Maria's untimely death. The clues all seem to point to murder, from the broken statuary to the trampled flowerbeds surrounding the deadly precipice. And since Dr. Wellman appears to be the only viable suspect, Savannah is sure it's an open and shut case. But she's about to learn that appearances can be oh-so deceiving. Pound for pound, this is shaping up to be one of Savannah's toughest cases ever. But she'd better find the killer soon...or else the bodies will just keep piling up...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When Maria Wellman, the unpopular wife of philandering diet guru Dr. Robert Wellman, is found dead on the beach below the couple's cliff-top estate, Savannah Reid investigates in McKevett's solid 15th mystery to feature the voluptuous San Carmelita, Calif., PI (after 2009's A Body to Die For). Granny Reid, who flies in for a vacation, distracts Savannah from her sleuthing, but she also provides major help (and biscuits!) after Savannah and her policeman beau, Sgt. Dirk Coulter, uncover a big secret about the Wellmans. Suspects include battered wife Lydia Mahoney, whose husband was blackmailing Robert, and Karen Burns, a single mom pregnant with Robert's baby whose mother runs a nightmarish day-care center. Though Savannah's wit about food and healthy weight continues to sparkle, the will they or won't they? banter between Dirk and Savannah is getting a little tired. Hopefully, McKevett (the pseudonym of Sonja Massie) will let the two fully connect soon. (Feb.)

From Booklist

Savannah Reid is back for her fifteenth enjoyable adventure in San Carmelita, California. The voluptuous private detective is once again asked to help her friend Detective Sergeant Dirk Coulter with a case. As in the recent series entries, the focus is on the diet industry, this time on therapist Dr. Robert Wellman, who claims amazing weight-loss success using his popular hypnosis program. Is that true or, more likely, a fraud? Either way, Wellman seems to be wildly successful, but all that is jeopardized when his wife, Maria, is found dead at the bottom of a cliff. Investigating the murder, Reid and Coulter soon discover that Dr. Wellman is not exactly what he claims, nor was he where he claimed at the time of his wife’s death. As usual, Savannah’s family and friends make appearances and help solve the mystery. With romance between Dirk and Savannah apparently heating up, readers will wonder about Dirk’s preoccupation with diet and exercise and Savannah’s inexplicable jealousy. A nice mix of cozy relationships and mystery. --Judy Coon

5.0 out of 5 stars spectacular mystery, January 30, 2010
This review is from: Wicked Craving (Savannah Reid Mysteries) (Hardcover)
There has been a dearth of clients at the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency, which leaves owner Savannah Reid bored. She thinks she will have a lot of time to spend with her Granny who has come from Georgia on a visit to San Carmelita. However, her good friend Detective Sergeant Dirk Coulter asks for her help on a case he is working; piquing Savannah's interest so she cannot refuse.

The corpse of Maria Wellman was found at the bottom of the steps leading from her home to the beach; both the cop and the private sleuth know instinctively she was murdered. Her husband, renowned diet guru Dr. Robert Wellman claims his wife's jewelry that she was wearing is missing when Savannah inquires about it. The doctor seems more concerned over the lost jewelry than his wife's demise, which enhances him as the prime suspect. However as Savannah and Dirk conduct a deeper investigation they unearth a horde of suspects especially when they learn the true names of the Wellman couple though the diet king remains the top choice.

Except for Savannah's friends and family, the rest of the support cast is a selfish lot with some having performed criminal activities; none are endearing as each is nasty leading the audience to believe they are real and capable of murder, and wanting each one to be the killer. That is the cleverness behind this strong whodunit as the reader will miss clues because of a desire to see the multitude locked away. G.A. McKevett provides another spectacular mystery as the victim is placed on the ultimate weight loss program: death.

I always look forward to another GA McKevett offering. The mysteries are great (and this latest offering is no exception) but the core characters are the true draw.

Tbey are kick-ass when need be, compassionate, warm, funny, gracious and graceless (looking at you, Dirk). But, mostly, they are very real.

Great job. The vigil for the next book begins...

I love opening up a Savannah book - it is like catching up with your good friend. I have read all of Savannah's adventures and this was another good one. I enjoyed the who-done-it, but what kept me turning pages until I was done was what Dirk was up to! As long as G.A. keeps writing about Savannah, I'll keep reading!!
