Sacred Warrior was a really good Christian metal band who released 4 albums before breaking up in the 1990's. They briefly reformed in 2001. Hailing from Chicago, Sacred Warrior was the Christian response to bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Queensryche. Put quite simply, Sacred Warrior was very similar to early or mid period Queensryche, almost to the point of being a carbon copy of the band. This is actually a good thing however, as Sacred Warrior were phenomenal musicians and strong,if occasionaly cheesy, songwriters. Singer Ray Parra was a dead ringer for Geoff Tate, while guitarist Bruce Swift was a smoking lead-guitarist. Drummer Tony Velazquist has his Scott Rockenfield and Neil Peart tricks down pat, while bassist Steve Watkins manages to keep it tight throughout.
Wicked Generation,(Sacred Warrior's 3rd release),is probably the hardest to find, but it's also arguably their best. Released in 1990, this album is their darkest, dealing with issues like: child abuse, depression, drug and alcohol abuse etc. Being a Christian album however, means that there is always that glimmer of hope in that Christ will pull you through even in the hardest of times. This is what I like about this album, it's real! The lyrics are good and so is the music, not all Christian metal is good but Sacred Warrior certainly is! If you like bands like Savatage, King Diamond, Helloween, Queensryche etc; but would like to hear a Christian version of that style-Sacred Warrior is a great band to start with! |
