Wicked Good Time,
This review is from: Wicked Good Time (Paperback)
I came across this book by accident and will subsequently be purchasing the first book written by the author. I am glad to say that there is another author out there who will become one of my favorites. I agree with the first reviewer about Miki being so overtly masculine. I would have liked a more in depth description of Miki, as in depth as Cristina. And yes, I did have some difficulty in believing what attracted Cristina to Miki, but if you believe that opposites attract and beauty is in the eye of the beholder than you can overlook the physical polarities of the characters and move on from there. What I was extremely impressed with was not so much the plot (which was good). There are many interesting plots out there for books and alot of authors have created, revised and published them. What really impressed me was the authors writing. This lady can write very well and believe me there is nothing more annoying than to have an excellent plot pulverized by someone who can not write. Everything flowed naturally, it was somewhat suspenseful, there was a build up of attraction between both characters and their intimacy was not accomplished within the first half of the book. It occurred later on. Of course there is nothing more interesting than a story of a straight woman who suddenly becomes attracted to someone of the same-sex and gives in to that attraction and pursues the relationship.

Wicked Good Time,
By A Customer
This review is from: Wicked Good Time (Paperback)
Loved Diana Tremain Braund's second book. In fact I was online hoping to find a third book in print. I guess I will have to wait. I noted a previous reviewer complained because of butch-femme images in the book. I thought all the characters in the book were well defined and the plot fun. Plus it kept me on the edge of my seat. I think if anything, the book demonstrates how we should celebrate our diversity rather than pretending our differences don't exist. I hope Diana Tremain Braund continues to write more and more books, because I plan to continue to buy them. Thanks Amazon for carrying them.

Interesting people...interesting place,

The second book is as good, or better than the first (The Way Life Should Be). I like this author's writing because she is respectful of all of her characters...even the smarmy ones are not entirely evil. Her writing catches the reader's attention and keeps it during a soothing exploration of life and conflict in a rural area. Grab a cup of tea, cozy up to the fire, and enjoy this book.

This is my first Diana Tremain Braund book. I was pleasantly surprised. The characters are well developed and the scenery is great. This book shows that a perfect amount of description can be obtained without overkill. The characters keep you pulling for them to get together. This of course is the basis for any great lesbian romance book. It will not disappoint you. The mystery portion is a bit predictable but entertaining none the less. I definately suggest this book to anyone who loves lesbian romance.

Braund's Best Yet!,
By
This review is from: Wicked Good Time (Paperback)
I'm so glad 'Wicked Good Time' has been released again. It not only is Braund's best book, it's a very good book in general.
Mrs. Christina Reynolds has recently divorced her husband and moved to her wealthy family's secluded home in Maine. She only wants peace and quiet, but the locals insist on crossing her land to get to a popular fishing lake. When she posts 'No Trespassing' signs, strange things start to happen in the night. When the local sheriff's office seems to laugh off her problems, attributing them to kids playing pranks, Christina calls the governor for help. Her pleas are answered in the form of Ranger Miki Jamieson. Miki isn't happy about the assignment, but welcomes the opportunity to visit her hometown for a few weeks. As Miki works on the case, she finds herself falling in love with the seemingly straight Christina. Her friends warn her against these feelings until they meet the reclusive woman and realize the feelings are likely reciprocated. The case heats up, as does the tension between Miki and Christina... until the explosive, well-written ending. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the last few pages. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down until it was done. Even so, I was sad to see it end. This is a great book... in my humble opinion, it's Braund's best yet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and what impressed me the most was the rhythm the author managed to capture and sustain. All writers strive for it, but not all succeed at sustaining it. From this standpoint, I found the experience of reading the novel downright magical, in that it enabled me to "feel with" the characters. Again this is something all writers strive for but aren't always able to do for the reader.

Wicked and Good,

I enjoyed every bit of this book. It was passionate and well-plotted and well-written. Christina is a bit mysterious, but that was part of the wicked goodness of the story. And a lovely woman in a park ranger's uniform ... okay, who *hasn't* had that fantasy? I'll be looking for more from Braund after such a pleasant experience.

A Naiad Romance to Relax With,
By
This review is from: Wicked Good Time (Paperback)
Sgt. Miki Jamieson is a Maine Forest Ranger who is assigned, at the request of the governor, to investigate the harassment of Christina Reynolds, a refugee from Boston to her family?s Maine residence. The problem is that the residents of Bailey?s Cove use the Reynolds property as a shortcut to the local lake, a privilege Christina has made clear must stop. Is the harassment just childish pranks to get back at Christina or do the pranks have a more sinister meaning? It is up to Miki to investigate and stop the pranks regardless of why they are occurring. During the course of the investigation, Miki finds herself powerfully attracted to Christina. The author leaves some loose ends dangling unanswered. For instance, she hints that Christina has run away from Boston because of an unhappy past ? but never tells us what the past is and the author tells us that a phone call from Christina ? not once, but twice ? results in the governor?s intervention, but never tells us why or how she wields that weight with the governor. The author would have benefitted from a strong editor?s hand to correct misused words and misspelled words. While this is a Naiad formula romance, it is, like others, just the thing to relax with in front of a fire after a hard day at the office

Good Formula Romance, Not Much of a Mystery Story,
By
This review is from: Wicked Good Time (Paperback)
Hard charging park ranger Miki Jamieson is assigned to investigate reports of harrassment being directed at ultra-rich, influential Christina Reynolds. Miki is a closeted lesbian (at least as far as her job is concerned), Christina might or might not be a repressed bi-sexual. The story, though told in third person, focuses on Miki as the viewpoint character, so we don't know what any of the other characters are thinking, only Miki. And Miki, though decent to the core, is pretty clueless when it comes to emotions, her own and others. Is Christina straight? Might she find Miki attractive? Will they ever wind up together? This is a formula romance: competent type comes in to save beautiful, vulnerable type being threatened in huge old house - the only difference being that in this story both the savior and the savee are women. And it's okay it's formula. Anything can be done well or poorly, and this is a pretty good example of the formula. Diana Braund has a deft touch for characterization, her dialogue rings true, her characters are believable and likable, the ongoing maybe-relataionship between Miki and Christina is enjoyable to read. And while some other pieces of lesbian fiction (the Nancy Clue/Cherry Aimless books come instantly to mind) are essentially meanspirited in that every straight man is a horrible, stupid, violent sexist, in Braund's world, while there are a few jerks (what would a mystery novel be without bad guys?), in general the good male characters are, well, good guys. This is refreshing. The book's only real drawback is that the mystery isn't much of a mystery, its resolution a serious anti-climax. This a good lesbian love story - that could have been a great book if it were as successful a mystery novel as it is a romance. |
