Did not live up to the hype,
By
This review is from: Wicked Lovely: Desert Tales, Volume 1: Sanctuary (Paperback)
I'm a big fan of Melissa Marr's and I really loved her first two books set in the Wicked Lovely world. I followed the development of the manga and all the hype surrounding it on Marr's blog with anticipation and excitement. However, I found Desert Tales: Sanctuary, which is the first of her stories to be made into a manga and also supposedly able to be read as a stand-alone, to be unusually full of fluff and weirdly confusing. The panels didn't always seem to match up seamlessly with the story-telling, and there wasn't quite enough story to make sense of what did happen in this short little book. Nor did I leave the book feeling as though there was anything obvious that needed to occur after the book ended. I think it could have been a lot better if a little more time had been spent matching the illustrations with the plot to make the story flow better and if Marr had given more pages to let the plot develop more. As it was it only felt half-baked.

Positively Gorgeous,

Wow. What a work of art! The pens of stunning artists and a brilliant author combine to create Sanctuary - the tale of Rika, a past Winter Girl. (Rika is mentioned briefly in Marr's YA novel, "Wicked Lovely".) The story is beautifully crafted and keeps you wanting more, more, more!
This was my very first Manga, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was quite surprised to find it easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to enjoy. If you've never experienced a Manga story, I highly recommend you check this one out, it's a keeper!

Better than Fragile Eternity,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I bought this item along with Fragile Eternity. I read the book first and was left wanting more. But when I read this I loved the character and the idea about having stories about the other girls Keenan had picked. Melissa's characters outside Ash and Keenan are so much more interesting and fun to read about. I can't wait for the next installment!

It was okay, but...,

I am not a huge fan of manga, I guess, or maybe I would have like this better. I thought ten dollars was a bit much to pay for an imcomplete story with art that I sometimes found hard to interpret. I am a huge fan of the Wicked Lovely novels and of comic books, but but just expected...more. More story, more detail, more pages with actual words instead of panels of pictures that were supposed to tell a story but didn't really add much over all.
I would read the next installment if someone else lets me borrow it, but I doubt I'll shell out the money for it.

Could have been cool...,
This review is from: Wicked Lovely: Desert Tales, Volume 1: Sanctuary (Paperback)
I'm a huge Wicked Lovely fan, but I don't think my high expectations are the only reason I was very disappointed by the manga. Firstly, I know it's common for males in manga to look very feminine, but until now, I've always been able to tell the difference between the male and female characters. Here I couldn't, until it was explained who was who. Some of the clothes the guys wear look just like the girl's clothes (even during a flash back to the Victorian-era!!). Also, the editing probably relied way too much on spell-check, because I'm pretty sure Rika's fried asks her if she wants to belong to the Summer Court now that Keenan's more `important' not `impotent'!!!
I think the story needed more words, less drawing. It just didn't hang together too well. Am going to give the second one a try. If you haven't read Wicked Lovely, skip the manga and go for the novels and short story.

You're Never Really Alone!,

This review is from: Wicked Lovely: Desert Tales, Volume 1: Sanctuary (Paperback)
It has been a long time since Rika has been human, mortal, but now as a faery Rika has chosen a life away from the cities, and not just because the iron and steel makes her sick. Rika has found a home for herself out in the desert, a sanctuary quite literally in the middle of nowhere. Rika has wanted to escape the politics of the Faerie Courts, but even out here as a solitary faery she can not escape her past.
Jayce lives out in the desert, spending his days unknowingly in Rika's company. While he draws the desert she paints him. Invisible to all but the other fay, Rika has come to love her time with Jayce, even if he doesn't know she exists. But when the desert fay becomes restless and hostile Rika will risk her freedom and her visibility to save him and her heart. Sanctuary, the first in a three part adaptation into a graphic novel, is drawn expertly and beautifully portraying the depth of Rika's emotions and rapidly changing circumstances. As her quiet life is shattered and unexpectedly invaded, albeit happily, by the artistic and good looking Jayce, Rika will soon have much to worry about. But in the mean time she can find sanctuary in the arms of the one she loves.

Great author. Quick read. Fun book, and may lead readers to her other urban fantasy texts. My students have kept this one off the classroom shelf with regular borrowing. It's a winner.

Eh..,
This review is from: Wicked Lovely: Desert Tales, Volume 1: Sanctuary (Paperback)
This is a manga of the series and the art is well done in my opinion. It starts off with the main character, Rika, and she is a solitary fae that Keenan wants in his court. However, she doens't want that because she used to be a Ice Princess, one of the girls that had the winter's chill in her thanks to picking up the staff. The story is set in the desert.
Rika falls in love with a human and she tries to protect him. Its a short story that has two more volumes in the series, Challenge and Resolve. This is what the story is basically. |
