Book Description

November 2008
Psychologist and talk show host Mick Callahan owes his buddy from the Navy Seals. Big time. So when Bud “Bone” Stone comes asking for help, Callahan, despite some problems of his own, simply cannot refuse. It seems Stone cut some corners trying to make a fast buck. Now he’s a big mess involving some small time con men, a lot of missing money, and a Vegas wise guy. It all seems simple at first. “Bone” just wants Callahan to an eye on his ex-mistress, a girl named Brandi DeLillo. He can’t be around to do it himself, because has to find a couple hundred thousand dollars to pay off mob boss Big Paul Pesci.

Callahan reluctantly agrees to watch the girl. He summons his eccentric friends to assist, and tries to get back to his career. But when Bud Stone decides the fastest way to fix the problem is to steal drug money from a local gang leader, all hell breaks loose. A surprising new character enters Mick’s life. Brandi DeLillo disappears. Mick gets kidnapped, beaten and dragged to the construction site of an eye-popping new casino in Nevada’s Valley of Fire. There are sinister strippers, murdered goons and weird bodyguards. We meet a giant European hit man and a mysterious gambler called ET. Once again, poor Mick is up to his neck in violence. Only this time he’s also on the run from both the mob and the law.

One of the Wicked, the third novel in the Mick Callahan series, is a page-turning and compulsively readable thriller that will keep you guessing to the very last scene.

New Mystery Reader said of award-winning author Harry Shannon's series character Mick Callahan, "Mick is all we love to see in a fallen hero; vulnerable, insightful, and just simply a likable guy." Media psychologist Callahan is a failed Navy Seal, a recovering alcoholic and a loyal friend. He's also a man with a hot temper and a talent for getting himself into trouble.

"Mick Callahan is a man with a past, a mean right hook, and a radio talk show. He's pretty good at giving people advice - just not necessarily good at taking it. The strength of this series is in its central characters, flawed, human, often funny, sometimes tragic, and the relationships among them."
--Mystery Scene

"Callahan is a fresh new voice, a flawed Everyman hero who knows his own demons and his own limitations yet is strong enough to overcome. This series stands with some of the very best noir mystery fiction around."
--Horror World

"Mick Callahan is not only likeable (as deemed by Library Journal) but he manages to endear himself as a very realistic hero, with a strong sense of purpose and an equal dash of vulnerability."
--Cemetery Dance

"A flawed and edgy hero. Dark wit, excellent writing and action-packed pace."
-The Rap Sheet, January Magazine

"Mick's road to redemption is wry, bittersweet and altogether touching."
--New Mystery Reader

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Mick Callahan, the former Navy SEAL turned psychologist and radio talk-show host, not to mention amateur sleuth, thinks he’s just doing a friend a favor. Bud Stone, a former military comrade, is in a bit of a pickle: he owes some money to a charmer named Big Paul Pesci, and he’s also worried about his one-time girlfriend, Brandi, whom he asks Mick to keep an eye on. But when Bud rips off a drug dealer to pay the mob boss, the situation explodes, with Mick caught in the blast. This, the third Callahan novel, is the best of this young series, tightly plotted and sharply written. Mick continues to be a very compelling series lead, a hero who is flawed in interesting but not incapacitating ways. With any luck this is still early days for this increasingly addictive series. --David Pitt

More About the Author

Like most authors, I've kicked around a lot. I've been an actor, a singer, an Emmy-nominated songwriter, a recording artist in Europe, a music publisher, a VP of Carolco Pictures and worked as a free-lance Music Supervisor on films such as 'Basic Instinct' and 'Universal Soldier.' I'm currently a counselor in private practice. All of my MICK CALLAHAN mystery novels are available on Kindle, and a few will be coming back into print in 2013. Check out my thriller THE PRESSURE OF DARKNESS. I have published dozens of short stories and written a number of screenplays, including the Lionsgate horror movie and novel DEAD AND GONE. My dark thriller CLAN was recently released on Kindle. My zombie opus THE HUNGRY (co-written with Steven W. Booth) is out now. There's also a pulp novella written for an exciting new Kindle/paperback series published by Amazon's own 47North. My entry is entitled THE DEAD MAN: KILL THEM ALL! For the curious, I've twice been nominated for the Stoker Award by the Horror Writer's Association. I've won the Tombstone and the Black Quill once each, and my short story FIFTY MINUTES, co-written with Joe Donnelly, was recently chosen for inclusion in the prestigious anthology Best American Mysteries of 2011. 5.0 out of 5 stars "Wicked" Good, November 26, 2008
This review is from: One of the Wicked, A Mick Callahan Novel (Five Star Mystery Series) (Hardcover)
Radio talk show psychologist Mick Callahan is back and better than ever. In Shannon's follow-up to Eye of the Burning Man, Callahan reunites with an old friend of his from the Navy Seals, Bud "Bone" Stone. Stone is in trouble and asking for a favor--to keep an eye on an old girlfriend who might be a target of some very bad men--and Callahan (who seems to have a nose for trouble) owes him, big time. So he agrees to help, and is quickly pulled into a dizzying web of mob goons, missing money and double-crosses. Bud Stone has angered the wrong men, and as he goes in search of the cash and a mysterious "disk" that everyone in the country seems to want, Callahan is left behind to try to sort out the mess.

It isn't in Callahan's nature to avoid a fight. Embroiled in a complicated love-hate relationship with a policewoman he'd been dating seriously and supported by his regular cast of quirky characters, he sets out on his own to uncover the truth. One set of mob bosses leads to another. Callahan seems to be on the trail of the money and disk, only to have it whisked out from under him. Throw in the unexpected appearance of a family member he never knew he had, the loss of his radio show, and a trail of beaten and murdered suspects, and suddenly nothing in Mick's world seems safe. One thing is certain: the people after this disk are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure its safe return, and Mick Callahan and his friends are expendable parts in a very dirty and dangerous game.

One of the Wicked cements Shannon's ascent to the top of the mystery/thriller genre. His Callahan psychologist series is every bit as good as those from better-known writers such as Kellerman, Evanovich and Grafton. Mick is a flawed and complex hero who readers can't help but love, a man who will do anything to help a friend and, luckily, has many friends who will do the same for him. He grows and changes in interesting ways through each book, something that often cannot be said about other long-running and more well-known series leads. Mick is sure of his strengths, aware of others' motivations, and baffled by his own insecurities and weaknesses, a winning combination indeed.

One of the Wicked marks some of Shannon's best writing as well, particularly early scenes where Callahan is counseling patients. But the novel moves quickly and never bogs down. If anything, the plot is almost too confusing, with enough twists and turns to throw the most seasoned mystery reader for a loop. But Shannon manages to pull it all together in the end.

One of the best mystery-thrillers of the year, and there's still a lot of room for Callahan to breathe. Readers should pray for many more books in the series. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Bad Boy Is Back, November 26, 2008

This review is from: One of the Wicked, A Mick Callahan Novel (Five Star Mystery Series) (Hardcover)
I'll confess I have a serious crush on psychologist Mick Callahan, who went from a self-involved, newly sober alcoholic ("Memorial Day") to knight in dinged and tarnished armour ("Eye of the Burning Man") and in this third novel ("One of the Wicked") becomes the unwitting, if not quite unwilling hero of a fast-moving, tough thriller. Booklist accurately calls this one the best in the series.

All of the familiar characters are back: the wise, empathetic, yet mysterious Hal (this character deserves a book of his own), Mick's resilient sidekick Jerry, and his hot-tempered love interest, Sgt. Darlene Hernandez. These characters are well defined, and their stories are nicely threaded into the plot. Bud "Bone" Stone is a terrific new addition to the ongoing cast. I hope he'll be back in the next novel.

This can't be the last outing for my favorite reformed bad boy. And someone needs to put this series into mass-market for more people to enjoy.
