2.0 out of 5 stars A little dissapointed...
I was pretty disappointed with this purchase. I was expecting more, and went against everything I knew as holy by buying this on a whim after hearing a REALLY good track from another album of theirs (3 play it cool). There are some vocals on this album that really get in the way of what could have been great music. Boo...

...and possibly period. As a lover of all types of music (Aesop Rock to Zeppelin), I can't recommend this album enough. I've had various CP/Crazy Penis/Crazy P records on both vinyl and CD for several years now, including this one, and I must say that they are my favorite producers of modern music. Their style is a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks that combine elements of dance, electronic, jazz, funk, downtempo and a hint of disco. It's excellent music that is both suited to getting warmed up for a night out, and for playing in the background for a dinner party. Either way, people will usually ask "who is this?". All of their albums are excellent, but this one is a good starting point. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny name, great band!, October 1, 2004

Chris Todd and James Baron are the founding members of this Manchester-based band. They emerged from the Nottingham music scene as prominent deep house DJs; as they got more into music production, they were signed to Paper Music, the Manchester based label, and gained popularity from there. This is their second album, and probably my favorite though I recommend any of their 3 albums without reservation. DJs at heart, their first album "A Nice Hot Bath With...", has more of an electronic feel, but as they added members and began touring as a band this, and their third album "24 Hour Psychedelic Party", have a much more organic feel with real instruments intertwined with samples/synths. Their sound is a blend of Disco, Happy House, Electronica, Lounge, Soul - very nice. Crazy Penis has a talent for making even the most heavily synthesized songs sound human and organic. Wonderful groovy non-abrasive tunes you can listen to all day. (...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Name But Great Album, February 27, 2003

Fantastic upbeat lounge album. Very easy to get into.

I have to say I had some reservations about the name. Coming home and saying to my girlfriend, "Hey look at this album I got by Crazy Penis", but as the album title suggest the nusic is wicked.

I have had the album for four days and I have listened to it constantly, back to back, for that entire time!

Track 2 "You started something" is a particular favourite and I love the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sample on Track 1 "There's a better place".

All the tracks are a between 6 and 7 minutes making them un-radio-friendly but great for getting into the groove.

This cd is a MUST for any chillout fan. Plus there's a couple of nice grooving dance tracks on it to such as 'you started something'....i normally list notable tracks in my reviews but frankly, pretty much every one on this cd was very nicely done! I highly enjoyed this cd. Well worth it on those laid back winter nights....enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars the Uks best kept secret, October 24, 2004
This review is from: Wicked Is Music (Audio CD)
I found this on vinyl about two years ago and was caught by the album cover photograph of Danielle (Vocalist) standing in front of the Manchester Apollo Theater. Manchester has been one of the most potent cities for music in the last few decades and Crazy (...) does the tradition proud, not only in terms of Manchester but of British soul music.(Rod Temperton, Jamiriquai, Brand New Heavies, Massive Attack and Zero 7) The album as a whole is a perfect union between digital beats, sampling and loops with live instrumantation. But where it really shines is in the content. "Keep On" is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a long time with production that would rival the likes of Norman Whitfield or Nelly Hooper. "Mind Wide Open" takes a bit of time to bloom but once it gets there ,the groove makes gets me right in the gut. "Soulmutation" brings back the move back in groove, especially with the deep mean ass bassline that compares with the bass in the latter half of "Jungle Boogie" by Kool and the Gang. If this doesn't make your (...) move than you need a soul transplant. The range of styles are from sexy house, soul to disco. "You Started Something" has such a monster groove that it would make Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards want to reform Chic. Yes,its that good! "You are We" is one of the first records I matched beats with and embodies what's best about good house music. I would some this album up by saying that Chris Todd and James Baron have taken many different elements and combined them with an astonishing finesse. To top it all off, Danielle's wonderful lyrcs and vocals comlipiment the soulful vibe of this music. If these guys were to ever get airplay.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. What a great find!, October 21, 2002

If you're into smooth grooves, good vocals, and a hint of samples mixed with some drum, you can't go wrong with this album. I picked it up on a whim and I can't begin to say how impressed with it I've been. I can just imagine what these guys would be like live -- here's to hoping they make their way to the western US sometime soon!
All of the tracks flow into one another, making the entire album a wonderful ride from beginning to end. High points include: "You started something", "You are we", "Keep on", and "Mind wide open"... although you'll find it difficult to skip a single track!

4.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Penis - The Wicked Is Music, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Wicked Is Music (Audio CD)
The Wicked Is Music, Crazy Penis' second album, starts with the dreamy "There's A Better Place," which samples from film Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It's a nifty start, though the rest of the album doesn't always reach the same level. "You Started Something" and "Keep On," although a perfectly decent house tracks, are both somewhat generic. "You Are We," however, has personality to spare; it's uplifting and full of good feeling. One of the best tracks on the album. The quality of the house on The Wicked Is Music is still high, don't get me wrong, but perhaps they could have made the individual tracks more distinctive -- A Nice Hot Bath With... certainly had that going for it.
